S580 2022 literally smoking!!!

All started with intermittent check engine light on and off. Car first spent 3 weeks at the dealer, they did some updates and said all is well. After one day of driving the CEL came on again, took car back to the dealer, after spending one week there got the car back, they couldn’t find anything wrong, updated and cleared codes. They were getting comm error codes. After one more week of driving CEL is on again, three days later smoke started coming from inside the hood with burning smell. Opened the hood and saw some wires and sensors on the firewall was burning away and smoking bad.
now the car is towed back at the dealer for diagnosis. My service advisor is very good.
now I am worried what could have happened if I hadn’t stoped the car to check. The car was driving perfect, except for the burning smell of you open the passenger side window.
any one else had similar issues or incidents.
TIA
please check the video below.

Crazy! This is one thing at least that has not happened with my 2022 S580. Stay safe!

If I am seeing what I think I am seeing ie the harness glowing you are lucky that it didn't start a big fire.

W223!! Starting to believe these are really problem cars.

yes true!!
so far things were not that crazy, ofcourse the car spent lots of days at the dealer earlier, when it was new, getting all kinds of error msgs including 48v battery. They finally figured that out. After 15k miles things started going south, right after the B service.
let’s see what explanation the dealer offers?

That thing is glowing red. Anyone know what that is? It looks like it’s leading into the fire wall? Is it an electrical line or fluid line?

Bunch of wires, and I think hoses. I was so mad didn’t get good pics.

everyone is welcome to chime in if they know what this could be. Will update when I hear from the dealer. Ofcourse I will escalate this to Mbusa for more answers.
no one wants a $140k vehicle to go up in flames.

Looks like the infamous MB paint-covered-ground-point. It's a feature.

Looks electrical and it actually looks like a body ground wire based on the nut connector. A loose connection can overheat but it also requires a lot of current to cause it to begin with.

Can you lemon the vehicle at this point? I think that will be your best option. Clearly, Mercedes could not diagnose what was a catastrophic issue. Please do not consider yourself attached, it’s just a car, and this one you own has proven to be unsafe. Good luck.

Glad your mom and you came out of this unscathed, that is scary indeed. I wouldn't trust this car anymore I agree with others to get MB to buy it back through lemon law.

Hmmm, high voltage, I wonder if it is leading to the 48V battery in any way?

Best of luck OP in getting this resolved.

Have you considered the possibility of rats getting up in the engine bay to chew on the wiring and harnesses? Back in the 90s MB used biodegradable wiring harnesses and wire sheathing and they had numerous occasions of rats chewing it up. That idea didn't work out at all.

This is a good question, not MB but some automaker likes to use soy and rats love that stuff. From the pictures though I don't see how it is damaged by rodent although my eyes might be deceiving me.

Are these two separate locations of damage? The top picture does look like a rodent chewed on it. The 2nd photo is so damaged I can't make out what happened.

the top pic area is beneath the first pic. Both are by the passenger side firewall. The second one had some insulation which started burning and I removed the burnt insulation. first pic are set of wires directly underneath which also was burnt.
the car just came back from dealer service a week ago.
no rats issues at my place at all.

thanks again for all ur comments and suggestions. Will keep you all posted.

OK. Then the top pic shows damage from the 2nd pic I would think. Hope it gets resolved asap.

So what they did they suggest for the repair and how did they explain all of that occurring to a new car like that?
