Matte Paint

Anyone have any experience with Matte paint? I’m tempted to get that Moonlight White Magno if I get another S Class.

My daughter has a dark gray matte, Glc43. I personally don't like the finish, but that's just me. It's always looks dirty to me.

Before I purchased my S580 i seriously considered ordering a CLE53 AMG in Matte Gray. I did a lot of reading and watching Youtube videos and most importantly consulted my detailer, In the end the constant care and the fragility of the Matte finish was just too much worry and work for an old man. I think for a younger person who has a meticulous nature the Matte paint would work. It was not for me.

I have 3 vehicles with matte paint: one white and 2 black. I have never had issues and would get it again. The care has not been any more than non-matte cars. I like the look of both matte white and matte black.

Did you do anything special like PPF or ceramic coat it? Also, I assume you can’t wax it. Did Mercedes provide care instructions? Thanks.

You can coat or wax it, but you can not polish or buff it in any way

I have a 2024 S63 e Performance First Edition with white matte paint. It's the first vehicle I've had with matte paint. I generally wash my cars weekly and wax frequently. I like the matte paint because it's really easy to care for. I don't have to wax it, just wash and drive it.

I would get the gloss white and do a matte PPF over the whole car. Matte is a nightmare if you ever get a scratch or a chip or need to do bodywork.

I was told that is not just a pain but the whole panel would have to be repainted.

I've seen the Moonlight white in a number of showrooms and they are gorgeous! If you go that route, be sure to post pics.

I’ve been researching this and most of the people who say it’s a nightmare to maintain don’t actually own it. From what I’ve read from actual owners across MBWORLD and Bimmerpost is that the maintenance is actually very easy and straightforward and it’s supposedly more durable, not fragile as some people report. I won’t even get it PFF. Repairing it is more difficult of course, but how often do we really need to do that? Rock chips abound whether it’s glossy or matte.

I mean...my MB salesman told me not to buy the one on their lot that they had that was matte white for this reason lol. Just for some background, I'm a former professional and now hobbyist detailer, so I'm pretty knowledgeable about car detailing and still keep in touch with lots of people in the industry. Its not that its fragile, its that when it does become damaged it is much more difficult to repair. For instance when you get a scratch there is no way to repair it...it can't be polished in any way. You can't use automatic carwashes. You have to be very careful when cleaning off tar or bird droppings because any etching that happens cannot be removed. You can't polish those things out...bug splats are a great example...they can etch into the clear in as little as a couple of hours...if they do etch in they cannot be polished out. You can't touch up rock chips. If you get water spotting and it can't be removed with a chemical spot remover they cannot be removed. The lack of ability to polish the paint removed the possibility of repairing almost every minor thing that could happen to the paint.

If those things don't concern you, then by all means go for it. I love the look, but I would approach it with a matte PPF that solves those concerns

I have the graphite gray magno matte on my C300. It does show dirt easily, but I haven't found it particularly difficult to clean or care for. I read some of the negative opinions before ordering my car, but when I looked at used ones online and in person, it seemed to me the the paint held up pretty well, so went ahead with it, and have been pleased. Good luck on your purchase!

I have PPF on all 3 matte cars, latest being a 24 s63e. It's more for my peace of mind. I have had one issue (years ago) where I hit a pole while opening the drivers door and was lucky to have damage just to the PPF. I would buy a car with matte paint again.

Bimmerpost is flooded with topics covering this since M models in frozen paint is common. Just google “Frozen Paint Bimmerpost.” Again, I think most people blow out of proportion the care aspect imo.

Did you read all of those posts? They say pretty much exactly what we all said here.

From the first page of the first link:

No regrets, from a maintenance standpoint. Only thing is scratches. For instance, a tool feel off my garage wall and clipped the rear fender and took some paint with it. $1500 dollars to fix a scratch 1/4” large. But I would still order frozen again. The look is totally worth the anxiety

Therein lies the problem. When it does become scratched there isn't anything you can do. If you're okay with that go for it.

And also echoing what I and others said about PPF:

Similar to
Asymmetrick, once you have the car ppf'd, no concerns, but ppf is pretty much a requirement. I tried to go two weeks without ppf (XPel Stealth installer was backed up) and the water spots that developed were brutal to handle

Seems to me you've made your mind up here, if you've made your mind up don't ask us for opinions and then argue with our opinions lol

I've owned. A road trip to Napa gave me a permanent reminder of the huge number of bugs I splatted. I tried to get to washing it at the end of the day, but we were there, wine was poured. Gotta take some of the blame I suppose.

Went on to get door-dinged, not so easy to fix as it would have been with vanilla paint.

I also had an annoying fingerprint problem, mostly around the door handles and at the trunk. Fingerprints show up more than I would have ever guessed.

Matte taught me that some owners aren't cut out for it, and that I'm one of them. I positively love the look, but I'd go film if I did it again. Doing the whole car isn't much more than the upcharge for matte anyway; and it would save the grief that I would expect, was coming

The at least it looks good alone might be worth it, I mean I saw another thread completely different. It was about the rear camera popping up and the motor sound being annoying but... At least it looks good: https://mbworld.org/forums/gle-class...-s-pretty.html

Thats the thing though, you can have the same look with film without the downsides.

I see, the film is the better way to go if all else equal.

Yeah, I don’t drive much—maybe a few thousand miles per year—and I like to take care of my vehicles, so I’ll think I’ll be fine. And again, according to many reported online owners, the care is really simple, in fact easier than gloss paint when it comes to washing and drying. Getting rock chips or smashed by bugs will happen regardless of the paint. In all my years of driving, I’ve never had to make a major paint repair ***knocks on wood***.

I won’t PPF it but I will ceramic coat it via Dr. Beasley’s matte paint care products. I’ll probably carry Beasely’s matte quick detailer in my trunk for any obvious bug or bird droppings that I want to clear away quickly.
