Kids love it, learned to drive in it and the M3, etc. They call it the James Bond car because it "looks old but acts new." Of course most of that is by comparison to the S55 and because it has a modern stereo. It was the "other" family limousine. Fun times.

Cheers,

I've got a bone to pick here. When I was thinking about a GT3 you were all... Oh no, your back will be sore, you won't be able to get out without looking like a monkey having sex with a football, etc. I'm thinking; this guy is kinda like me, love cars, seems to have had many of the same or similar. So I actually gave those comments weight.

And you pick up a Targa. Only now do I see your entire plot exposed; understand how I was manipulated. Sigh... the inhumanity.

Crab, my dear dear friend, the GT3 is a different beast. I have owned one and it is a track car and yes it did almost break my back. The Targa 4S is much more of a tourer (as far as Porsches go). It is much softer than a GT3 and is a fun weekend car.

No longer own them but I have owned:

2000 M5
1995 Euro spec (imported) M5
1999 M3 (converted into full racecar for endurance racing. Won back to back championships)
1995 M3
2023 X3M competition
2021 E450 coupe
2025 GLE 53. I hated this car. Took a beating trading it for the 580.

The 580 is no sports car (obviously) but it will get up and go when you ask it to. So far the 580 is my favorite street car

Now that is an endorsement for the S class.

About the best: I don't know that I'd say street car; but one best I'd give the S580 is road tripping. It's easily the top dog among those I've owed for eating miles. That's across the board; comfort, tunes, the least stiffness after a long stint in the saddle, all of it. Maybe not the GOAT, but a generational talent in any event.

Best street car largely depends on what kind of driving one does and where they live. For me the best street cars are generally any kind of hatchback. They are small and nimble to zip around the city and find a parking spot that larger vehicles have to skip. We also have parking lots with designated compact spaces where technically it's illegal to park a standard-sized vehicle like an S Class. They are designed to save space in parking lots. Especially when I travel around Europe, I pretty much always rent some hatchback, often a Golf. Just way easier to navigate the tight streets and parking structures.

I had a Fiat 500 for a while, too much hassle maintaining a car over there, and I sold it. Now, I rent a car as needed, but usually hire a driver if a car is involved. Neither all that often though, my apartments are in walkable areas. Kinda goes back to the hassle factor; I didn't use the Fiat much, so selling wasn't a hard choice.

The driver I use in Sicily has an E class, a diesel. I wouldn't even think about driving down the roads he frequently takes. I lack that kind of skill. Almost unbelievable.

That reminds me. A few years ago we did a trip to Portugal. Rented a Golf and in one place we stayed at an Airbnb near the town center. Driving in was kinda normal width roads, but driving out due to one-way streets were ever narrowing roads to the point where I had to fold in the side mirrors to get out. Being from Europe, those narrow streets weren't something I haven't encountered before, but my wife and her sister were both amazed at how I squeezed through there. Anything bigger than a Golf and we'd essentially been stuck.

Or there was the time we drove down the Amalfi coast. This time we were in a bus driven by a skilled driver. That was one of the most entertaining bus rides ever. Residents who lived on the coast came out to direct other cars to back up as we got into a stalemate at one point and the tourists in rental cars coming the opposite way were completely beyond their skill levels causing a grid lock.

Many years ago, I first did Corvettes, then, I graduated to Porsches, all of which were bought used. In 1975, I bought my first MB, a used 1972 350SL. I really liked the comfort of the SL and in 1979 got my first new one, a Signal Red with “Bamboo” 450SL, which I absolutely adored. I was building my business in L.A. at the time and drove Honda Accords & Toyota Supras on a daily basis, keeping the SL for weekends & special occasions. I had it for 7 years. Got a couple of new 911’s & found out that I “couldn’t go back.”

Over the next few decades, I did have more Porsches, a couple more Corvette’s & BMW 850i’s, but I always came back to the SL’s. The SL was just my kind of car.

In 2019, I ordered an SL450 with ABC. I put AMG forged & polished wheels on it, and then, just to keep the wheels free of brake dust, a set of AMG Carbon Ceramic brakes, making the car a true “UNICORN.” I love the way the car looks and with the ABC, Exclusive Nappa Leather & the simply marvelous retractable hardtop, it is “THE” most comfortable 2-seat convertible I have ever driven. I still “keep it for special,” and it just turned 4,500 miles. It is just a crying shame that MB changed these magnificent cars like they did, but that’s just my opinion.

I still 'own' a 2006 M3 Convert. SMG. I have not seen that car in about six years (it is in Ill-Noise). Cant say I miss it. It had its moments. It is not a "Brute Force" car like the E63S.

Years ago I had 3 (yes 3) 3000GT VR4's. Few months ago I saw one and was able to drive it....yeah, what a freaking slow *** heavy boat! I can not believe I was ever so in love with that car.

I hear you about them not being missed. Mine sits in FL so no winter or hard top. Silver over Red. Fun when I'm there, not thought about when I'm not. But something tells me I'm gonna sell it for a lot more than I paid for it.
