Sunroof/sunshade controls not responding.

I have 2 month old S580 and the sunroof controls just stopped working the other day. I can't open or tilt the sunroof and I can't close the sunshade. The touch sensitive controls do not respond at all. And even the on-screen menu for the sunshades won't let me close the front sunroof shade. Anyone else have this issue? Is there a way to get this working again without going to the dealership?

Thanks.

I did have this happen once in my 2022 S - But a quick recycle of car fixed it for me. Meaning, get out of the car, lock it, wait for a full shutdown (I waited 20 minutes or so), then get back in and restart the car. All worked and didn't reoccur. If you've already done that - you might try a soft reset of MBUX - hold down the power button for 10 seconds until you hear a loud click sound, then release. MBUX will restart. If this doesn't work, there may be bigger fish to fry.

Thanks. I'll give the MBUX reset a try. The car has been like this for a few days now. Leaving it shut down all night hasn't helped.

No. Luck. Rebooting the MBUX system did nothing. That set of touch controls is just totally non-responsive. The sunroof won't move back or tilt and the sunshade is stuck in the open position. The Roller Sunblinds menu works for every other shade except the Front Roof Blind. And the "Close All" button on that menu doesn't work for that shade either. If no one here has any other ideas, I guess I'll have to visit the dealership.

Try opening and closing them using the key fob outside of the car.

That sucks. I think we all had our share of early dealership visits, which feels egregious. I had to go back on my literal second day of ownership due to a check engine light, which, after a few repeated visits, was eventually fixed via a simple software update. Good luck, I’m sure they’ll fix it.

Tried that too. No luck for the front sunroof/shade.

If you're looking for a "bright side" to this, at least the sunroof was stuck open! Hopefully a quick visit to the dealer will fix.

@AKSteve curious if you got this fixed? And if so, what was the issue?

Did you try using voice commands? That will tell you if the problem is in the switch, or the operating mechanism.

Whoops. I've been away from the forum for a bit. This problem is still ongoing. I have tried telling the car to close the sunshade and nothing happens. The sunshade/sunroof is just totally non-responsive. I haven't bothered to visit the dealership for this yet, but I'm sure I will later in the spring if I can't get this figured out on my own.

Just curious, I was thinking about disconnecting the car battery, waiting a while and then reconnecting it. In the hopes that things will reset themselves. Will this cause problems or is it ok to try?

I would not disconnect the battery, you're asking for trouble there...

My guess is the control unit in the overhead console is bad

According to your profile @AKSteve , you've got a 2026 model. That's what warranties are for. Let the dealership fix it.

is it the overhead? I thought he meant the MBUX screen.

He said the controls in the overhead console weren't working either.

I know, I just thought this might be an issue someone else has dealt with before and that there might be a quick fix. I generally hate going to the dealership unless I absolutely have to. I'm definitely going to get this fixed before summer though, so I can use my sunroof. I hate to say this, but this is the first issue I''ve really ever had with a brand new car. Maybe I've just been lucky. I only bought this car last October. And I've had one other weird issue as well where the rear doors sometime just won't open from the outside. I've had to reach back and pull the inside handle on more than one occasion to let a passenger in. My previous car was a BMW 750 and it was rock solid. I hope to get these issue worked out soon because I really love my S580 overall.

You've been lucky. Not sure how often you get new cars but I replace both cars with brand new cars every 3 years and I would say over 50% of them have something go wrong. It will be a simple fix.

Even Toyota and Lexus cars, I have had 8 of them all bought new and thinking back...maybe 2 or 3 of them didn't have something go wrong within the first year.

you’re just like me I seriously hate to take any of my cars to the dealership and whenever I can fix the issue myself, I would do it. It just my OCD. I even hate to see the techs fingerprints on the screen or residue on the steering. Am a guy who keep gloves to wear them when my hands aren’t so clean after a soccer game or whatever and have a towel for blue jeans; you do NOT wanna be me, but I feel you, lol. I can literally spot any new swirl mark and every visit to my dealer causes anxiety. Luckily most of my cars didn’t need many visit. Good luck with the repairs, just wanted to iterate on your hesitation taking it to the dealer that you are not alone🤣

I can definitely relate to what you said lol
Ive been wearing driving gloves in my previous cars/toys with leather steering wheels because I hate the shiny wear/contamination from the sweaty palms.
All my previous weekend cars had pristine leathers for the next owners when I traded them in - which made me think what good my dedication served…
That thought along with the fact that the S having the wooded outer steering wheel made me NOT wear any gloves when driving.
I still wipe them down every 3 or 4 drives though

Do you unlock using the Unlock button on the keyfob? You can set the keyfob to unlock only the driver's door rather than all doors.

Next, if the battery is low on the keyfob all manner of strange things can happen. For example, the door unlocking when you place your hand into the handle requires the keyfob to be near by, which requires a good signal.
Even though your keyfobs are new, the battery could be old - or defective. Try replacing with a good fresh battery.
