Well, apparently I’m an idiot

Well, I’m 57 years old, and have owned I don’t know how many cars including 7 Mercedes Benz products. I rolled up to the gas station in my brand new S63 Eperformance for the first fill up. Pushed on the gas door - nothing happened. I’ve had the car wrapped, so I’m thinking did they screw something up when the pulled the door off and wrapped it? I hit the lock/unlock several times, no luck. I looked on the dash and the door, couldn’t find a release button. So I gingerly drove home, tank basically empty, and the battery nearly empty too. Managed to get home and get it plugged in. Digging around the trunk looking for a manual release. Nothing obvious. I contemplated tearing out interior trunk pieces but I thought better of it. Spent time searching various forms of “W223 stuck gas cap door”. Not much help. Finally, on about page 4 of a search I see a part number and picture for the W223 release button. I went back out, looked in the door pocket, pulled the umbrella (that the dealer gave me when I bought the car) out of the door pocket and found the release button. Geez! Problem solved. Oh well. Enjoy your laugh courtesy of me! - Lennie

that's interesting... maybe cuz urs is newer model year and/or cuz it's a phev model... but my '22 s580 is merely push flap, no interior switch. or at least none I'm aware of... and I'm similar age so maybe I'm the idiot

If it makes you feel better, you are not the only idiot, nor the dumbest one. I was young and dumb, could not start my new Audi Turbo Quattro (1985). Turned the key and nothing happened. I had it towed to the dealer. Two mechanics are looking all around, inspecting the starter cable, when one of them innocently asks me "Do you have a kill switch?" Ugh!! I had completely forgotten that I had one and had set it the night before. Never forgot again!

I had the exact same experience 3 weeks ago when I got mine. I had a 2023 S580 and had no idea there was a difference.

Its the PHEV, apparently all PHEVs have to have a release button because they have to vent gas before they can release the fuel door. Same on our Pacifica, the latest PHEV one we have has a fuel door release and the previous gas ones have a push release door. My wife and I did the SAME thing lol

Where was your manual? Or at least the manual on the MBUX?

Lennie, we've all been there, and oftentimes, when a task is simple, but we can't figure it out, it can make us feel "like an idiot".

In this day and age, it's nice to see someone that practices the art of self-deprecation; something that is almost completely lacking in society today. Most of us were taught by our parents when we were growing up to be humble and to not fear poking fun at ourselves. Your post was the first one I saw this morning, and it was nice to read. Glad you figured it out.

The venting gas makes sense. What really confused me was that the charging door is a normal push and open deal, so I assumed the fuel door would be the same. No need to read a manual when you are 100% convinced you know how to do something. I actually READ my manual, but skipped over refueling as I assumed I knew how to do that (but I paid close attention to the charging as I’ve never had a plug in before).

Yup, no reason to assume it would be any different than the same car that isn't a PHEV

just dawned on me it's the same on my range rover phev - EV flap is just manual push, but gas flap requires interior release button...ha.

it's super nice... first time RR owner, very pleasantly surprised how fast it is, especially in EV-only mode. as much as i appreciate the v8 in the s580, i am very curious for the phev version. have owned it for about a year and probably fully fueled the car less than 10x.

the s63e is altogether different animal i'd imagine.

That may very well be my next car, a PHEV Range Rover. I drove the S580e and wasn't impressed. It felt great in EV mode but I didn't like the feel of the I6 or the transitions between the two. We have a PHEV Chrysler Pacifica and its great. PHEVs make a ton of sense,

Borrowed my sisters Mazda during a visit. Came out to head to my parents and nothing. No starter sound nada. I opened the hood to check battery terminals looked clean but gave them both a wiggle. Walked around got in tried to start it and nothing. So I called my brother-in-law at work. He left and drive over to the house. Got in the car and varoom it started. He looked at me and asked if I’d put the clutch in? Oh **** how dumb could I be?!

You are definitely not alone.

First time I got in a keyless go car (push button start) it took me a few minutes before I realized I had to press on the break to get the start button to work.
Even though there was a message right on the driver's display telling me to do so - Doh!

Battery mode on the S63 is good for 17-20 miles +/-, depending on how aggressive you have the regen-braking. Also, just for fun, here’s a pick of the gas cap release. Originally the umbrella in the pic was even further concealing it. Cheers!

They gave me a MB PHEV loaner once. I had the same ordeal for about five minutes at the fuel center until I Googled it. They did not mention it to me when they dropped the loaner off. It was quite disconcerting. I would have assumed the salesman would have gone through everything with you on a new vehicle when you pick it up. They did for me. About 30 minutes of getting all of the settings where desired and explaining features

I notice you have the 4D Burmester audio system - what do you think of the sound quality and overall system?

The 4D system is awesome — not sure it’s worth the extra $6,800, but I guess that wasn’t t he question. Several different preset sound modes, ability to focus on any of the 4 seats. The cool lit pop out tweeters are fun. The only feature that caused any debate in my house is the 4D part in the seats. The sound “effect” goes from 0-10. At 10, it is really shaking the seat, and VERY noticeable, even at low volumes. Upon delivery, unbeknownst to me, that was where the passenger seat was set (driver seat was at 0). My wife kept complaining about it, even at VERY low volumes. Long story short, I figured out where the seat effects were in the UBX. Her’s is not off, mine’s at a 2 or 3, can’t recall. Sound quality is terrific, seat effects aside.

They spent nearly 45 minutes - how to charge the car, etc. Most of the time was spent navigating through various UX features and the app. We neglected to get to the fuel door switch. And I really did read (most) of the manual. Clearly skipped refueling with petrol.

I have the seat resonators turned off in mine. They were fun for about two songs, then I quickly got tired of them. I'm with you on the sound quality - amazing.

i couldn’t find the rear seat cupholders in our first family road trip. Had no idea you had to press the button on the rear seat armrest 2x to release the cupholder mechanism!

my family was saying stuff to me like “you spent 145k on a car with no cupholders” lol

My S580 doesn't have the 4D system, but the E350 loaner I had did have these "4D" seat rumblers and I really liked them. I set them to like 4.
