The ESP in my MB's have saved my *** more times then I can remember. What your cousin did was take that car to HIS limit, and without a seat belt to keep him planted in his seat, he was unable to correct the car once it tried to bring everything back under control. Go too far, and physics win every time.
It does apply brakes and cut the throttle position back in certain circumstances though. Anytime the yellow triangle on the cluster is blinking means the adhesion limit of the tires has been reached and the ESP is either braking certain wheels to keep the car straight, cutting the throttle position back to reduce power, or a combination of both things. Again STEERING IS NOT AFFECTED.
