New S55 owner

Hi guys,

Just traded my 04 SL500 in for a new 06 S55 !
Unfortunately, I have only been able to drive a few miles so far, but I can tell this is going to be a great car.

Luckily, today I found out there is a small space at the bottom center of the windshield that doesn't have the UV coating--I almost got a ticket the first day, because my radar detector wouldn't read very well through the windshield.

Anyway, just wanted to say hi. We have quite a bit of winter here, which sucks, so who knows when I will get to drive it again

I should of taken pics when the car was at the dealer. We have enough winter going on here that the car looks like hell! In fact, today was only the second time I was able to get the car out of my driveway since bringing it home last week.

Except for the slightly different 06 19" wheels, it looks like every other black S55. I finally got to do some highway driving today, and this car is awesome!!

Congrads on the new S55! Best of luck with it. Just wondering about the radar thing you were talking about. How did you know that the radar detector wasn't working well through the UV coated windshield? I wouldn't even think about that.

I noticed on some of the normal false alarms around town that I had to be right next to them before the radar went off. Even with the detector right up near the clear area, it still doesn't seem right. In P.A., only state police are allowed to use radar guns, so I have not been able to test it with a speed trap. Needless to say, I am very nervous about this. I know there are a couple of remote radar detectors out there, but I really like the Valentine units, especially the front and rear arrows.

Congrats!!

On my 02 S55 I have the V1 Radar Unit to the left of the rear view mirror in the black-bubble area. The Rader works perfect there and a bonus is that the V1 cant be seen from outtside b/c of the black-dotted area. Try it out and tell me what you think.

That is the other part of the winshield that doesn't have the coating. I might have to put it up there, although I really didn't want to get that involved with the wiring.

Where did you get your power source from?

I had heard a few years back that PA was still using VASCAR. I think the local police were doing this. They do it from an overpass or bridge. They time you from point A to point B. No radar detector will detect this. They can also use a helicopter! Although, I don't know exactly how recent this info is. I live in Jersey and they used to set it up on the ramps for the Betsy Ross Bridge.
Also, how do you get it to "stick" in that black bubble area? I don't think that a windshield mount will work well. I have the Passports in my vehicles. My Z06 Vette has the "heads up display" on the windshield. I understand that this is a special windshield to accomplish the reflection. My Passports work good with this car.
Interesting!

Interesting!
The local cops still use Vascar, but they generally have painted lines, which you can see.

I am concerned about using the suction mount--haven't had much luck with those over the years. I'll do some more testing.

I have no problem with the V1 sticking onto the dotted surface, still using the suction cup mounts. Im not sure where the V1 is getting power from b/c I got a radio shop to do the wiring.

Just an update... the V1 does stay up by the mirror without any problems, it also works better up there than down on the dash, but still doesn't seem to work as well as my older V1 in my other car. I guess time will tell, but I am concerned.

This is a GREAT car!!

And another update...

Today I put both Valentine 1's in the car. One on the dash (in the center) up by the windshield, and one up by the mirror.

The one up high definately worked better, but it is possible the wiper was partially blocking the lower unit.

It seems as though the windshield is blocking alot of the side scan ability. Hopefully this isn't going to be a problem, as police radar can't be more than about 20 degrees off center before it loses accuracy.

More experiments to follow.

I use a V1 and have never had an issue with it not working well on the lower windshield opening. It is slightly off center and about four inches high. Mount the V1 with the sensor at the higher portion of the opening and the wipers will not interfere. I use one of the blacked out areas for the tollway transponder.

That's exactly what I was going to try: raise the lower unit, and try lowering the upper unit to slightly below the blacked out area.

Thanks.
