2007 SL550, 2008 S65, Golf cart and a few non-MB vehicles
Absent,
I has been bidding on the one at Autohaus Eden and still am the high bidder but never hit reserve. I called them the other day wanting to know what they wanted to end the auction early and the salesman told me $160k
I will check with Naperville.
Thank you for your input.

After talking to them, I feel the same way as they(salesman) were pretty proud of their car....which I am more than happy to let them keep

Same here. I didn't even get far enough to negotiate on their asking price. I asked them to fax the VMI and/or CPO inspection report. They said it would be done first thing in the morning. I never heard back. I followed up with emails and calls. Nothing.

'03 G500, '13 G63, '17 GLS63,
I am having similar thoughts. I love my E55. It's roomy and comfortable. However, I like to take road trips and, while it is perfect for my me, my wife and 15 month-old son, we are expecting another soon. I can't help but think how the extra room the S-Class provides would make life easier. Add to the fact that extra power comes in handy, and I am becoming more and more tempted to make the switch.
The W221 S550 is a gorgeous car, but I am still leaning towards W220 S65 if I suddenly get the urge to replace my E55. It is still more unique than the W221 S550, regardless of body style, if that means anything.

May want to also consider new S63, esp w/a $0 down lease....and compare costs/desirability/timing of getting a new '07 S65 w/a 2 yr lease vs getting a 63 w/a 2 yr lease....
Hearing mkt for new '07 S65s (@MSRP) is fairly tight in CA....where no unsold cars avail...and where next build spots are late06/early07, even for repeat custs who just realized they want an '07 65.....

aintME: Sorry to hear that you never received any response back on your deal.
I have given Naperville a counter offer which I think is very fair considering that a new silver S65 sold for less. If and when they want to sell their car, all they have to do is call me.
medici78: Taking the powertrain out of the equation, their is no comparison between the W221 and W220. The new body has it all (looks, much refined interior, more room) plus the rear doors open up close to 90 degrees which would make it even more convenient with your son.
I agree that the 2006 S65 is more unique than the S550 purely because of the drivetrain....brakes don't hurt either.
I figure that if I can get one(new w-full warranty) at a great price that it would offset the massive depreciation these cars have.
WSH: The S63 aren't due till early 07 and I have no desire to lease any vehicle. The 07 S65 is truly an awesome machine but unfortunately I do not enjoy burning holes in my wallet.

Anytime my Friend! Love the color of your 07' SL550!(That's my wife's favorite color...) Also, off the subject for a second, your Westie looks like the one I bought my wife for her Birthday about 6 years ago so I guess great minds think alike!
Good luck on your New S65!
Greg.

I absolutely agree Obsidian is the color in sunlight wow!......... wait about 3 months for the s550 (unless ur leasing) find some wheels and lower it u will not regret it as u will the old style, plus your protected for a few years. Powertrains are not depreciation guarantees and the 2006 was introduced in 1999, thats a long time in car terms.

Romeo550,
Obsidian is indeed stunning in sunlight. My feelings are still mixed on the 06 as the trade off for the drivetrain also means getting a "dated" W220 body and interior which also would not be the color of choice.
Down here in Orlando, I would also be limited in utilizing the potential of the S65. The dealers that I have spoken with already know where I stand on my pricing. If I can't get my deal...retreating to a S550 sport with my desired options doesn't seem too bad.

Exactly. The W220 S65 is one helluva machine, but, the S550 is a damn good car itself. You can't really go wrong with either.

HaHA not a bad car to "retreat to"! You are correct that you would very seldem use all of that power in a very big heavy car its just dangerous. I like your posture .....if u dont get the deal u really want then u have another car. U know I bought my car for 7800 off sticker so not so bad I am sure u can find a s550 for about the same. G luck

I would have to agree, get the old S65 instead of the new S550 (assuming you cant afford the new S600/65 of course). I think one test drive in each will convince you to get the 65... if you get the 550 you will regret it every time you press the gas pedal.

Meegle,
The S550 is an awesome car, BUT the S65 is in a totally different class. I mean, come on. 604HP with 8 piston Callipers......not to mention the suspension and sheer "coolness" factor! Moreover, a new S550 will set you back around 100K, but within 2 or 3 years, you'll be lucky to get 65K.
With the s^%, the car was originally worth $190K, and even though it will continue to depreciate, it won't depriciate at the same rate as the S550.
For me, regardless of how you analyze this decision, the S65 is the HANDS down choice.

First of all, I would like to thank everyone for their input on this matter.
Taking future depreciation into account, I can't go wrong with the S65 if purchased at the right price...while taking much less of a loss if I decide to sell it in 2 or 3 years.
I do agree that there is no comparison in terms of performance or "coolness" factor.
While I am not one who drives around like a crazed maniac (plain cruising is fine with me) having the additional power on tap would be nice.
I can get a new silver model for $110k while used ones with 10k-20k have been bought in the mid/high $90k range.
I will only take a new black version and have offered several dealers more than the $110k that the silver one is fetching but they are all stuck with their $120K-$130k range.
I have time on my side and am in no hurry to "blink". They have my name and number, if and when they agree to my offer....I will be happy to cosummate the deal.
