S63 windnoise??
Hi guys,
One thing i noticed on my S63 is that when you start picking up speed on the highway the fan in the dash gets louder, is this normal??? It starts doing it around 90mph, but when i shut off the climate contriol it's very quite as you would expect an S class to be. Also i'm barely at a 1000 miles with my vehicle and i was wondering, anybody out there with more miles notice any oil comsuption???

I've never noticed the wind noise issue. As for oil consumption, I had to put in a quart at about 2,500 miles. I'm at a little over 6,000 now, and I have not had to put in any more - yet. My SA said to plan about a quart every 2,500 to 3,000 miles.

Didn't notice aany noise.
In terms of oil I'm at 7K and had to add oil twice - got a message to check oil at next fuel refill on each occassion. These messages did not persis after shutting down and occurred with a very hard accel ;-) but the dealer checked and added some oil.

So if you have your climate control on auto, and are doing about 90 on the highway the fan doesnt get any louder??? It stays the same as if you were doing 55?? I'm trying to think what else this could be cause when i shut the climate control to off its really quiet or when i'm going normal speed.

Haven't noticed wind noise - I used 2 quarts of oil in 5k miles - my dealer said that mercedes benz won't authorize any investigation of this problem until after 6k miles. So they drained all my oil and refilled it. If it happens again they said they will even exchange out my engine if needed.

Its not actually windnoise, it sounds like the fan is picking up speed.. like the wind maybe is pushing against the fan to make it spin fast or maybe these fans are speed controlled, they go faster as the cars does, i wouldnt think they would, but you never know with MB.

Yea the windshield is a pain but could be worse. I just tried at speed and toggled the climate control off and on repeatedly and heard no differences in sound. The road was smooth and the stereo was off. My guess is to take someone from the dearler and let them hear it.
Good luck.

Oil consumption
Hello all,
I am new to the forum. I have owned many different MB. I currently own a 04sl600 and 06 S65. No wind nose issues but with the S65 I am having problems with oil consumption. Within the first 1200 miles my car advised adding 1 litter of oil at nearest filling station. It happened again at 3k, 4.5k, 6.5k, 8k, 11.5k, and 13k. I am fighting with MB, they are saying it is normal. They just conducted a oil consumption test and found that 4 cyclinders were consuming major oil. Some say that AMG cars drink oil, but I would not pay 180k for a car that I would have to put oil in every 1,500 to 2k miles!!! The tech at my local dealership that is working on my car said that it is not normal!!! I am asking them to give me a credit on the purchase of a new MB. Anyone else having the same issue with S65 or other AMG??? Any Techs with info or answers????? Thanks for everyone's time.

I added a quart at 2500.
I had a free oil change through the Merdes Benz club at 3000 (after a Performance Driving Event with the BMW club).
I added a quart at 4500.
I added 1.75 quarts at 7200
I just got back from a Porsche Driving Event (the S63 passed over half of them!) and i have not checked it. The car is at the dealer now and I will check it today after the Kleemann exhaust is installed.

oil
I haven't noticed the wind noise described above on my S63, but usually have radio on. The oil situation is another story. So far I have had to add oil at 1000 miles and again at 4000. This is annoying (much like the tiny sunglass holder that doesn't hold squat).

My car has done 6500 miles has taken 1 litre oil top up at about 5000.
My last S65 w220 used about a litre of oil once between services.
The only time I hear the aircon is if I use the demist function.
The sunglasses holder is prefect for a set of proper sunglasses , I have a pair of Ray Ban aviators I leave in there ( I save the pink wraparound diamonte ones for the disco )

I've never had a wind noise issue. If anything, the car is too damn quiet! I get up to 85 or 90 without so much as a whisper of outside noise.
As for oil consumption, I added a quart at 2,500 and another quart around 6,000. After that, it made it to Service A without any more oil being added.
Such a sweet ride

This oil consumption is really alarming to me. Makes me wonder if I want an AMG model now.
Looks like by the time you get to service A mileage, you've already changed the oil by adding it along the way.
Just tell the SA: "Fill'er up with oil" , and if you don't mind, check the gas."

No wind noise issues; often drive w/no use of radio/stereo/iPod to simply enjoy the exhaust music.....superb acoustics....
Oil was added by dealer at 1-3K mi chk. Now at 7500mis and no "add oil" warning since....in fact, car has not had one, even trivial quality/reliability issue....
Perf car engines (esp turbos) tend to eat oil....but varies by specific copy of car and mileage (often heavier burn first 5K mis).....
Uncharacteristically for me, am impressed enough by my CL63 that I will drive it until '09s arrive; will opt not to get SL63 (my original plan); told my dealer to order me first copy of '09 CL63....so will actually see how this car behaves during the some 15K mis that I'll accrue by trade-in.....a simply brilliant car; am more impressed after 7K+mis of driving than even in my first 2K mis (which were also rather positive)

You're sort of like me. Uncharacteristically, I've decided to hang onto my car longer than usual as the W221 quality and features are just simply overwhelming and I'm actually getting attached to this car. I'm actually a little concerned that the later models/refreshes may be dangerously taking minor steps backwards. I have reasons for saying this, as I think MB may try to improve on perfection and screw up a tad. Not major screws up but as a current observer/owner, it may be easy to scrutinize the future models as a tad inferior to what we have now. It may be price or it may be additional features that are nice to have but not necessary and expensive to repair, etc, etc. We'll just have to see. In the W220 model, the refreshes were a welcome improvement. I just hope the W221 goes that way as well . I digressed. Anyway, I'm not sure exactly what it'll be, but already I'm seeing things they are doing that may be going a little too far with an otherwise fantastic automobile.
For example, I like the 07 tailpipe extensions better than the 08s. I like the smooth leather as opposed to all of the extra diamond stitching (not that it is bad, just not my style), I like the COMAND system better in the 07 (other than the lack of traffic info), I like the headlight washer switch in my 07 whereas the 08s had it omitted. I'm also hearing that the V12 engine will be changed. Why change it when it is doing so well? Hopefully this new engine won't be an introduction to new sets of problems. Just little things like that are scaring me a tad.

Trumpet1, we're on same page....
Was disappointed that MB put those silly rapper/ricer exhaust tips on 600s for '08....and that tacky quilted leather/clunky S65 wheels/codger wood steering wheel on S/CL65s (030 wheels are rather transforming; and how expensive is a proper-quality leather sports steering wheel (w/leather/stitched airbag cover) on a $200K car???)....
But hope '09 S/CL63s have the interesting downshift blips that C63/SL63 seem to have (gain much pleasure from CL63's exhaust note, esp bouncing off mtn walls....blips would be even more interesting)....and BlindSpotAssist is useful in urban downtown driving....and hoping '09s have a more integrated iPod function (as revised SLK supposedly has), as current approach is clearly a sloppy afterthought.....and, hopefully, AMG figures out that enough guys are willing to pay for a ?$5-10K leather upgrade option to get a car w/fine-grained leather appropriate for a $150K+ car....(amazing how many of the 100s of unwanted, new CL/S63/65 are lacking various options or have wood choices unacceptable to most buyers).....
And, though I park my cars rather carefully; have them detailed regularly; never have food/drink, etc in cars....I do drive my cars exuberantly, esp on wkends in mtn twisties....and end up w/a few stone chips, etc.....am OCD enough about my cars that I need to trade-in even an otherwise impeccable car b/c I notice small stone chips, etc that most would never notice....
Net, net, I suppose our problems/concerns w/S/CL are rather trivial vs what owners of any other cars suffer (chk out other car boards; S/CL are amazingly bulletproof in terms of quality/reliability, despite having tech advances and safety engineering that make any other car (at any price) seem rather primitive/dodgy/laughable).....

But then I never saw the N/A 63 unit (turbos would be different!) as much of an advance over the K55 engines... For my preferences, low down torque is much more useful to these big sedans than higher rev horsepower.
