Same here, especially with MBs. When you can get an 04 600 in the 30s, why the hell would you buy a new C?

GT Speed
While I never expect to see its top speed, except possibly at the Salt Flats as a passenger in someone else's car and wearing a helmet and fire proof suit, I have played with its cornering capability (without the helmet and suit). A combintion of weight, stability control and awd keeps it on track in an accelerating corner, with no tail slippage, even with very light (VERY light with ceramic brakes) breaking entering a corner. It has a firm but very quiet and comfortable cruising ride. Visability ain't the best with very large b pillars, but the the large side mirrors for the most part offset that.

I've had my 06 Flying Spur since new, bought in December of 2005.
Car has been relatively reliable and trouble free, except for a few minor issues that were dealt with immediately and covered under warranty! I've only put 22,000kms on it though, so that might be one reason I haven't run into any major problems.
In terms of fit and finish, it is absolutely stunning. Everything from the dashboard, roofliner, visors, seats, doors is covered in perfectly stitched leather. Wood and carpeting also are perfect. One of the reasons I went for the FS is the exclusivity factor. Where I'm at, the S class comes in many different levels, from an S280, S350, S500 (yes, not 550 as in the US), S600, S63, and S65. Thats 2 more models than the US has. The interiors for all S-classes are the same unless you go for a S63-65 which has the diamond stitching. Interior colors are pretty much limited on the S class as well. On the Flying Spur, you can pick and choose from 15+ different interior colors, including two-tone interiors, etc.
In terms of performance, you definitely have enough torque to haul the beast around, but it does tend to feel heavy sometimes, especially at lower RPMs and on corners.
Regardless, i've had it for 3 years, and have just extended the factory warranty for another year. Once thats up, it'll be traded in for a 2010 S63 Not that the S63 is any better (i've driven the 63 many times), but I've always wanted one.
