Regarding the "chrip" question, my 2004 S55 got this last year, it is caused by the supercharger clutch when it engages. At first MB Service told me it is normal and live with it, but I found a note on AMG Private Lounge with another owner in NJ who had it repaired under warranty.

I emailed my MB Service Advisor with the data and part numbers and they approved it, got it done and it is has been fine ever since.

Many 55 engines in various models have this problem, let me know if you need more info on this and I will dig up the old email with details.

With regards with the 55 engine, supercharger chirp, here is the note:

I have a 2004 SL55 AMG, with 18,000 miles. It also had the problem with the "chirp" sound when I accelerated, even at a very casual rate. Although the "chirp" did not seem to bother some owners, I definately did not care for it. It made me feel like I was driving a very cheap car, and that something was wrong with it.

I researched the Supercharger "chirp" noise on this and other Mercedes Benz sites, such as benzworld.org and mbworld.org. The problem was showing up with the 5.5 litre supercharged engine, even on other M-B models. The noise takes place at around 1500 rpm, when the supercharger clutch surfaces make contact, metal to metal. I made copies of all the owner's experiences with their dealers, especially the owners who felt that their dealers solved the "chirp" problem.

Armed with a pile of data, I went to my MB dealer, Precision Cars of Atlantic City, and spoke with the service manager. I provided him with copies of all the data I had researched. He and the shop's head tech researched the supercharger "chirp" noise in a MB database of information. He and the head tech also had a conference call with ??? at MB. Even though the reps at Mercedes HQ in Montvale told me that there was no "fix" for the "chirp" noise, my service manager found that there was, indeed, a "fix" available.

The folowing repair was performed while the car was still within its original 4 year warranty. There was no charge for the repair.

The following is taken from the first service order when the supercharger noise "chirp" was initially diagnosed at the dealership:

"Client states there is a chirp noise heard on acceleration between 1500 & 2000 rpm.

Parts on order.

17392 Supercharger clutch material noisy when engaging. Road test for noise - locate noise to supercharger clutch. Follow conference call notes and order updated supercharger clutch assembly".

The following is taken from the second service order, after the service department received the necessary parts, as well as three special tools which were required to disassemble/reassemble the supercharger clutch:

"Cause...
094792 Supercharger Actuator, R & R / Repl. if req.
1 113-098-00-40 Coupling
1 113-090-00-44 Coupling
090000 non1 . 7 heat hub as per wis document

17813 SOP Supercharger clutch assembly defective as per last RO. Replaced clutch assembly and pulley bearing. Note: Extra time for heating hub to 165 C. to install assembly for supercharger as wis. Road test.

The above repair was performed in November 2007. I have not driven the car very much during the winter, but now that spring 2008 has arrived, I have put about 500 miles on the car. The "chirp" sound is definitely gone. All repair work was done well and I am extremely happy now. I hope the repair permanently solves the problem and that it will not return in the future. Only time will tell.

I hope the above information will help other MB AMG owners whose cars have a supercharged 5.5 litre engine that "chirps" upon acceleration. Good Luck !

It's a good thing you took it for a test drive before purchase. Was it vibrating then?

It's also a very good thing you had a pre-purchase inspection performed before purchase. Did the mechanic detect any vibration?

What warranty did you purchase?

i had some vibration turned out to be bad tires and slightly bent rims. I then purchase some 19" and vibration came back, i had road forced balance done, and vibration gone.

Check:

-wheel to see if bent
-check tires
-check if you have any worn suspension parts (tie rods, ball joints, etc, etc)

The benz dealer said that left and right lower control arm bushings are torn... then they stated "vehicle unsafe".
Also that its gonna cost $1500 to replace, this includes alignment.
Is the vehicle unsafe??
I see that this part(bushings) is a common problem but no recall.

those bushing are fairly easy to remove with a bushing press tools..

i wouldn't think it got anything to do with your vibration..

and vibration at 40-50mph sound like a tires issue.. check for balled spots etc... rotate to see if it goes away..

good luck..
