One things for sure, if they could only put the gearbox from a 63 into s S65
or a S600 you wouldn't be having this chat.
When I get in my S600 now it feels really stodgy and un responsive.
I am so used to instant kickdown, extremely fast gear change, almost frantic
performance when you need it, the old S feels old.
But then perhaps you buy an S for that reason, maybe you guys are trying
to turn it into something it wasn't meant to be. My S 's party trick is to
accelerate without noise or fuss which often makes it feel slow until you see
how fast your passing stuff.
And I know the SL63 gearbox won't take the torque, before anyone reminds me.

Things are going to change soon with MCT. For 2011 it has been upgraded to handle 590lbs and 664 lbs of torque (the ratings for normal and Performance Package of new V8TT going into 63 AMGs).

With the safety margin already built-in ,that transmission should be able to handle a decent aftermarket boost in the new S63...

take a good good look at the 2....interior and exterior....

Interior on the 221 is the best in its class...most advanced period...and the drivetrain is years ahead of the Bentley...

the Bentley may be up a tad on paint...but that is it....

That is...you guessed it, a leather head liner. What does the s65 have? Oh thats right, alcantara, a synthetic suede:

Compare that to the little square IWC in the benz.



You see that silver stuff? Thats metal. The shiny bits in the benz are plastic.



You get wood tray tables in the benz? didn't think so. How about the HVAC vents. Yes, that shiny stuff is metal. The benz has black plastic.

How do you close the door once in the benz? Oh thats right, you grab the door insert that has ridged plastic. The bentley? Leather grab handles:



Even the vent trim is nicely finished. You don't even see that with the door closed. Its just an extra level of detail work.

When you talk about the "push test", the benz creaks a bit on the wood trim and some of the vents. Not so on the bentley. Further, the gaps are smaller on the interior panels.

These are little details that are simply superior in the bentley, as it should be for a more expensive, more exotic, and more hand built vehicle. Audi's have great interior build quality, so does the bentley.

As to the drive train. If you want max power, the benz is the way to go. However, the bentley delivers great power without any wheel spin (AWD), and is quiet, smooth, and plenty powerful.

The S65 is a $90,000 S550 with leather and alcantara in place of plastic and cloth, and a huge engine dumped in. The flying spur is built from the ground up to be a $200k vehicle, not a really really really nice $90k one.

Just my thoughts, not meant to be offensive, just realistic.

The difference in feeling at light throttle take off has to do with the torque converter. A 500 and a TT V12 are two totally different animals. The feeling is quite like putting a converter with a higher stall speed in a drag car. It helps keep the engine in the power band, and the mb also has the capability to moderate the slippage/locking of the lock up clutch.

we've look at a bunch of them and they've all had issues, from the color being a bit goofy to the condition being a bit worse than we'd prefer. Still looking.

yeah, I hypothesized that this may be the case about a page up.

My father's old W220 had wooden tray tables in the backseats (I wish I had some pictures as I haven't seen another one with them) and they did make it look a lot better than an elasticated pocket! They were an optional extra, I think it was around £800 on each side.

The other bonus (and I am making a sort of assumption here) was with the ventilated seats. Without tables you have vents in the back of the front seats which takes in the air. With the tables there were no vents so it was piped in straight from the AC. This assumption is made on the basis that the ventilated seats on my W220 are less effective than compared to those on his.

Other than that, Bentleys and RRs are exquisite inside. The 600/65 interior is very nice but it's blown out of the water by the higher end cars.
