Front Strut Bushing Question

2002 S55 AMG
Front Strut Bushing Question
I noticed what appears to be about a 1/2" gap between the rubber bushing and strut mount plate on the strut towers of my 02 S55 just below the electrical connector. It is the same on both sides. When the front wheels are off the ground, I can freely move the assembly up and down. Is this normal? It seems to me this bushing should be tight against the plate. Then again, I am a newbie to these cars. Hoping someone can shed some light as I can't find any info on this.
