55k engine - need help with supercharger drain screw!!!

Was changing the supercharger oil yesterday and dont even ask how the mechanic managed it, but despite all the tissues under there he still managed to drop the little screw into the bowels on the engine bay.

Does anyone know if a replacement fill screw is available and what part number i should be asking for?

Or is there an alternative coz the cars been stranded since last night.

Thanks.

Just took mine out and measured... 10mm x 1.0 pitch, 5mm hex head.
Cheers,
Jeff

Damm bro, the only chance you have is the dealer, because the closest you'll come in finding that unique size hex pipe plug is this

http://www.metric-threaded.com/detai...010100&id=2961

http://www.oreillyauto.com/site/c/de...1446&ppt=C0266

Only problem its 8mm in length you need 10mm. Unless you apply some Blue Threadlock on it and then it will work. Did you try using a magnetic stick down there and just trying your luck to get it to catch on it? YOu may just wind up waiting till MOnday till the Merc dealer opens up to inquire if they have it or may just have to special order it.
HOpe you find a plug soon.

Afraid not, this is not a dealer part and such cannot be ordered through dealers. They will sell you the complete supercharger as i found out to my horror.

Iv tried magnets, air-force, sticks, rocking the car . . . everything. Bu came out with nothing. A good guess would be that its either wedged under the oil filter housing or has gone under the supercharger itself. Either way, a lot of stripping down is required and im not too sure i want to do that.

Now looking for some kind of alternatives to be honest. The closest iv had have been either an M8, which seems about 1mm too small or another imperial one which seems to be about 0.5mm too big. I could probably get the big one in there but once it does, it aint coming back out again, and then thats a new set of problems if it fails.

Thanks very much for this Jeff, not knocking your help or anything but are you sure its 10mm, i tried an M10 nut in there and it seemed too big.

Another member in the E55 section measured one and it came back 3/8 inch.

Im not very good with measurements or conversions from imperial to metric im afraid.

What a STAR

According to atleast one member on here, Shardul, he also lost this screw but as his supercharger was also off the car he took it to a hardware store and bought a replacement that fitted. So there is hope, unfortunately though, my superchargers still stuck to the car.

But i do appreciate your help, more so than i could put in words here.

Let me know what you find and il send you the appropriate info.

W4Sim - No worries; I'd be freakin' out too, if in your situation. I measured the hex nut with a thread gauge and the hex nut passed all the way through. At least that's what came out of my SC today. The pitch is unusual (I think), so be cautious. But i am certain of the dimensions. And I can see where one may think - in the heat of the moment - that the hex nut is too big. But that is the correct size. Good luck!
Cheers,
Jeff

I think this is the main problem, the thread itself, im sure its not standard. Thats why im finding it hard to get anything in there, and i definitely dont want to force something to turn in there incase it strips it.

But thanks again mate. Im going to wait and see what Blackbenzz can find and if no luck then im taking these measurements to an engineering firm to see if they can knock something up.

You are correct that it is not a regular pitch. I've been to several local stores and tried a few plugs but no luck yet. The pitch seems to be a piping thread like NPT. I will try to go to fastenal tomorrow and pick something up for you. They are closed on the weekends.

Iv managed to "borrow" a supercharger nut, take it to an engineering firm and they have confirmed its a 10x1.0 nut, commonly used in high pressure hoses and connections. Jeff (MB-Dude) was spot on target there.

Regular threads on M10 nuts are either 1.5 or at best 1.25. These are a little unique in that sense that its only a 1.0 pitch. I was told this is because of the pressures these nuts have to take, which i can only assume will be high in that supercharger, especially with all that heat.

But MANY MANY thanks to all who have helped, without your information and guidance i would have been completely and utterly lost.

A special thanks to Blackbenzz for running around trying to get the exact match, i know that could not have been easy. If theres anything i can help you with in the future then please let me know.

Thanks chaps.

Sorry i read this too late. In a pinch you could have used the screw that holds the strut to the lower control arm....its longer and conical but you can sand the cone off...and then the screw will just stick out a bit...not an issue....the part number for that screw is A 000 990 44 77

Just my bloody luck!!!

But thanks non-the-less, it may save someone else the hassle the next time it happens.

Wink

The dealer does not offer this bolt. Mercedes claims that these supercharger units are life time seal. Just an fyi. It doesn't mean that I wouldn't change the oil at 100k

Given the state of the oil that came out of mine, and the very small quantity of it, i would say these superchargers are DEFINITELY NOT lifetime sealed.

I took out about 50ml to replace it with about 150ml, so it was running way too low anyway.

On a side note, i was looking at some of the previous paperwork on this car and the supercharger has been replaced by Mercedes themselves after the car was about 4 years old. Doesnt say why it was replaced by it might have been the lack of oil in it, as after another 4 years the oil was low again.

Its not uncommon to lose oil thru the breather, but I do agree that changing the oil(unlike mb) is def a most if you want to prolong the life of it.

Mike - Post #2 will give you the dimensions of the screw. It is an unusual thread pitch, but available. As to where to get one, I would search your geographical area for an industrial fastener outlet; not a hardware store. Look for someplace that specializes in nuts and bolts; specifically metric. They may not have it in immediate stock, but they should be able to find you one.
Cheers,
Jeff

be careful guys, the correct fluid level is not at the hole. It should be less than that. Many of us have changed the oil and filled incorrectly up to the fill-hole. There is a more recent thread somewhere on the interwebs that says how much should be in there. That's why we all wonder where the oil has gone since we all think its low. It doesn't go/leak anywhere.
The only correct way I know to fill to the correct level would be to remove the charger, drain it vertically and then install the correct amount. (sorry I dont recall how much that is).
