about to purchase a 2008 S63 but there are some issues

hi folks - first time posting on this forum.

There's an S63 with 107K miles on it - just out of CPO warranty that I fell in love with but the pre-buy inspection revealed a potential issue with the timing chain on this car.

The shop I took the car to have the codes scanned said that they're hearing a chain noise coming from the upper timing cover bank 2.

Also there was this code associated with the issue
0740 - Continuous camshaft adjustment (RIGHT) : Incorrect position of the intake camshaft (P0010) .

when I went back to the dealer selling the car - they were telling me that this is a known issue with the S63 motor and that the factory doesnt recommend doing anything about it.

However I couldn't find anything on this forum about it which makes me wonder their honesty.

So I'm asking for help - is this a common issue - timing chain noise - or the code I posted above ?

am I exposing myself to a world of hurt by buying this car ? I know there are tons of issues that could happen to it besides the one I mentioned but this one is already present on it.

Please help - thank you in advance.

Welcome to the board I'd say pass on it an find another, but deep down if you know you really want the car get it an have the dealer fix that problem with it, no fix no sale.

I agree. If you like S63's spend the money on a low milage car rather then dumping money into it.

There are a bunch of low mile well maintained car available.

It is common for the cam adjusters to go bad on these early year model engines. It is a fairly easy fix if you have the special tool. Have the dealer fix it. They can replace the lifters while they are it, if that hasn't already been done. If you like the car I wouldn't let it deter you.

LOVE mine but they can be VERY VERY expensive to fix. Is the price in the low 40's for this specific car? If not, I'd keep looking. The mileage is high but not unreasonable and this problem is ... how much for them to fix? Can't they just fix it? Maybe print out this thread and say - fix it and I'll buy!

I decided to skip that S63. the price was in the low 30s. I thought the price was great but my wife came clean and told me she thought the car was too big for her to drive and the only reason why she liked it was the status symbol.
Anyway - now that I have a specific target I'll look for an E63 or CLS63 with the 6.2L engine.

I do wonder if you anyone has info on who provides extended warranties for AMG vehicles.

Smart move. Mine's actually way too big for me too but I bought it anyway as I thought it looked cool and could make my rear passenger guests super comfortable on long drives! Probably should have bought the E63 but ... oh well, it's done. Maybe next time. Actually thinking about getting a 2011 E63 but... not today.

I bought my warranty from the dealer, a continental warranty. VERY expensive. $5645 for 5 years extra or 50000 miles extra on top of the 50k miles that were on it when I got it.

Good luck! You did good here.
