MB 2010 S63 AMG Timing Cover Gasket
Just bought a MB 2010 S63 AMG- beautiful vehicle!!
However after buying (2 months ago), the mechanics detected a leak of the timing cover. Their estimate is 3,500 since they have to remove the entire engine. Does this sound right? I can't find any literature on this cost or repair.
I'm already in this car 4,000 due to a "major leak of the power steering system" that caused the ABS to fail. Even though I'm well over cost on this car, I'm in love with it.
Thanks,
Ben
Depending on how severe the leak is, it can be left alone for a while. Each person will make that decision individually.
Many engine timing covers can be removed and re-gasketed without removing the engine. Some timing covers require the cylinder heads and oil pan to be removed for a proper re-gasket job. Cylinder head removal often requires engine removal because of complications related to exhaust manifold access and separation location (flange location).
If the oil pan needs to be removed, I can see how engine removal would be required.
