07 S65 fuel filling issues

I have issues filling the tank. Keeps cutting out. I saw most posts saying its the charcoal filter. Some say its an easy fix cleaning the valve/solenoid. Others say it better just to buy a new assembly all together. Thoughts?

It’s in the passenger rear wheel well. The solenoid twists out and there is a white filter in the canister. You can either take it out completely or spray it out with brake clean. It’s technically part of the canister but just tear it out to clean it.

I had an issue with the gas tank in my '07 S65 this past fall. Every time I'd fill up, the gas pump would shut off every gallon or two, Very annoying obviously, Took it to the service center and they replaced the tank and the extended warranty covered it. I think it was about $8,000.

Did they say what was wrong with it?

No. Just that it needed to be replaced.

The issue is the evap charcoal canister located in the rear passenger side wheel well. It's a fairly simple plug and play replacement, and the part is about $400. East DIY project that takes about 30 minutes.
I took a stab at bypassing the whole mess by removing the "clogged" canister, cutting it apart, removing all the spent charcoal beads, guts, etc,,, then glued it back together and re-installed.
Unfortunately, it did not make the check engine light go out....BUT it did make the car easy to fill at the gas pump again.

Ultimately, I just replaced the canister with a new one, the CEL went out, and the car is easy to fill again.

I have always heard that squeezing an extra 55 cents in to make your sale round up to the next dollar actually fills the vent with fuel and is not recommended. The vent for the fuel filler neck (pipe or hose) eventually gums up and causes the problem that was mentioned by the O.P. Is there something different here that I am not aware of with this charcoal filter?

AutohausAZ has-

Genuine Mercedes Vapor Canister Shutoff Valve- $150

Genuine Mercedes Vapor Canister Filter; In Right Rear Fenderwell- $422

Worth trying the valve first or with age just better to replace?
