Trans fluid

So I finally got around to checking the trans fluid level with the dipstick I ordered. My 2006 S55 AMG was shifting funny. I looked at the level with the car warm and had to add a whole liter of Pentosin trans fluid. Does that sound right? Could the trans have been that low?

Your transmission uses ATF not Pentosin

Pentosin is the fluid for the ABC system!
Ok you used P-transmission fluid you should not have to add 1 liter unless it wasn't filled to the right level before

Pentosin ATF 134

I used Pentosin atf 134. I haven’t gotten the transmission serviced yet, just the abc.

im Just wondering how much atf fluid it should take to raise the level on the dipstick from around 3/8” below the low (when warm) to full? I want to make sure I’m checking the level right.

i had to figure out I needed to push the dipstick past the last bend but not be a gorilla and make it turn and lay in the bottom of the pan. I had to take 200 ml back out but it’s good now. Shifts a lot better, up and down.

now that you know the level of fluid was the problem, I'd say run it 500 miles then flush it all and refill with new filter. Then you'll know the quality of fluid is good too.

I drain and refill my trans every second or third engine oil change.
Noticable improvement in shift quality with fresh fluid.

John, I presume that's because of time, not mileage. 3 oil changes could be 5 years for some people, me included. On some of these cars it takes me 2 years to put 5k miles on it.

My car gets 20,000 miles annually. I change oil every 5000-7000.

I wipe the dipstick on a paper towel to decide if trans oil is ready + the sniff test.

got it. The longer I own this car the less I drive it. I think it had 90k ish around 2012. Now it has 135k ish. I try to do every 5k oil changes just so I can keep up with them. Sometimes that's annually, sometimes not. But trans fluid and plugs every 5 years is easy to remember.

Thanks for the advice. I’m getting less scared of this car (first MB). I’m finding that these Mercs are really well built and reliable. As a mechanical engineer and German descent, I appreciate the math and dedication necessary to appreciate these machines.

it's just discipline within a HUGE margin of safety. As you see, they can handle some neglect and spring back. With no neglect they go forever.
