W221 S65 AMG Check up/Tune up

Hi Guys I need some advice and opinions! My dads S65 has basically been standing in the garage for the last 4 years, because he moved back to Germany. It has maybe been driven 500 miles in the last 4 years. Originally he planned to ship the car back to the motherland and enjoy it there but it looks like that wont happen anymore so he offered it to me so it can stay in the family and not get sold. It looks like I will take him up on the offer. There is nothing wrong with the car and it does everything as it should, however before I take it from 100 miles a year to 1000-2000 miles a month I would like to do a little tune up/check up to minimize the risk of getting stranded on the side of the road.
What would you guys recommend should be renewed/changed at a minimum after a car standing for so long? I could just take it in for service but I want to have some sort of plan before the dealership takes me to the cleaners for thousands of dollars.

I think these things at a minimum:

- Oil Change
- Tire balance and alignment
- Engine Air filter

Any other suggestions?

I would do spark plugs.

About 50,000. Sparkplugs will be about $1,500. You think it’s necessary?

A lot of the coil pack issues with that car centers around adequate spark and voltage regulation. If it was my car, I'd do it. Spark plugs are typically 5/50 replacement items anyway.

Tires might need replacing from flat spots and dry rot, depending on how old they were before the 4 year sabbatical.

Brake fluid replacement is specified every two years, not mileage based, so it should have been done twice. I would do this, it's easy and cheap if you DIY. Not terribly expensive at an indy.

OP... Every fluid in the car unless that fluid was fresh when parked.

Engine oil
transmission oil
differential oil
ABC fluid and filter
Power steering fluid
brake fluid
engine coolant
charge coolant

If spark plugs have not been replaced... good practice. However if it runs on 12 and does not misfire they are OK.

It will likely be ready for fresh engine mounts as they sag; driven or not.

Delightful cars they are.

If you are mechanically inclined, have the tools, space and a hoist there is not a thing on the list that is impossible.... though mounts will be a treat your first time doing them.

Enjoy the car. I loved my 221 S-65.

Agree 100%. These are not cars which do well when sitting for years and they're not cars you want to replace parts on that can be ruined by tired or dirty fluids. Fortunately, most of the fluids are easy DIY.

I was fond of draining and filling the transmission every engine oil change to every other. Always noticed a difference in how she shifted afterward.

Inspect the short water hose from the water pump to the thermostat housing. Over time it will expand (bulge) and becomes less flexible if you find it to be old and hardened replace it. If that hose cracks or brakes you have an instant overheating problem that could be fatal.

Since it is at the front of the engine it is fairly easy to get to and replaced when you remove the termostat housing.
