Power Loss After Hard Acceleration on 2003 S55 AMG (63k miles)

Hello AMG Enthusiasts,

I'm seeking advice regarding an intermittent issue with my 2003 S55 AMG, which has 63,000 miles on the odometer. Occasionally, after performing some hard acceleration pulls, I experience a complete loss of power when attempting to accelerate again. The car seems to hesitate or fail to respond to throttle inputs. However, after turning the vehicle off and restarting it, the issue is temporarily resolved, and I can perform additional acceleration some amazing strong pulls without issue.

This issue only seems to occur after hard acceleration, and the car operates normally again after a restart, even after multiple pulls. I’ve been unable to pinpoint the exact cause and would appreciate any insights or advice on what might be causing this power loss.

Here are a few things I’m considering:
  • Throttle body or throttle position sensor issues
  • Mass air flow (MAF) sensor problems
  • Boost pressure or overboost protection engaging
  • Engine management/ECU related issues
  • Ignition system malfunctions (e.g., spark plugs or coils) but previous owner who I purchased it from 2 weeks ago, already replaced them.
Has anyone experienced something similar, or does anyone have suggestions on what might be causing this? Any guidance on what to check or where to start would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks in advance!

Any codes? Any time you see weirdness like that, there's likely something the computer sees that it doesn't like. Very vague answer, but without codes, there's too many places it could come from to even try to guess.

So, Looks like I am on my original Water Pump, so going to upgrade to the new part number:

Bosch 010 Pump which should fix this issue.

Wil keep updates

This is the issue. Well known. No need to update unless that DOESN'T fix it.

Cheers,

Supercharger clutch is engaging (or disengaging) and preventing boost due to high Intake Temps. Doing exactly what it should be to prevent knock. Upgrade your cooling system and you'll have better results. You're on the right track with the 010 as that is a common upgrade.

Replace pump

Supercharger is cooled by a recirculating pump under the right front bumper. This fails and the temp sensor in the supercharger circuit tells the ECU to not enable the supercharger clutch because temps are too high.
replace the pump with the Bosch or Johnson pump mentioned above.
