2006 S55 Vibration / ABC Issues

Long time lurker, first time poster.

Recently purchases a 2006 S55 AMG Black / Black 4 Seater with 103k on the clock and running into a few issues. Currently has a nasty driveline / cabin vibration between 1800-3k. This occurs in park and neutral causing me to think its engine side instead of trans side. Replaced the harmonic balancer and did a belt service. Issue still persists, although the balancer rubber was separating so not a total waste. Unsure where to go next, between engine mounts, trans mount, and / or flex discs.

Second issue, ABC system was shot. Needed tandem and had several leaks. Scrapped for Yellow speed racing coil overs and unluckily on the last corner ran into an issue with the quick disconnect. Removed the disconnect but unsure what size fitting to replace or size line cap to use since I don't plan on using ABC in the future.

Thanks in advance.

Very likely to be the engine / tranny mounts and you may as well do the flex discs while you're at it. I'm no help at all on ABC conversions.

Welcome aboard.

Coil-overs on an S-class are a No-No, however since you already went that route i would recommend installing some sway bars to help with flex. You should be able to cap that line with anything that will fit. It won't be pressurized any longer so it doesn't really matter.

After thats sorted, schedule a proper alignment at a good reputable shop, and i would recommend having all four Wheels re-balanced as well.

I'm willing to bet your vibration issues is Transmission mount related, especially at that RPM. I had the same exact issue and a new trans mount fixed it. Very Easy DIY. Replace both motor mounts as they are probably past due as well.

When he says the coilover conversion is a no-no, the lack of swaybars in the ABC suspension is the reason. Roll is controlled by ABC, not by bars, no without the ABC there is no roll control, which can make the car feel goofy.

Adding sway bars usually means finding an S-class donor or just buying new lower control arms, as the ABC control arms won't even have the fitting. Then, of course, sourcing the bars themselves.

I was headed that way with my '03 S55 when a flood solve the problem for me. The car never fired up again after that, but my insurance company paid me well for the hulk. Doesn't really look bad, but this was enough to destroy modules under the rear seat.

Painful photo. Seems it worked out. The engine that replaced the 275 in my 221 S-65 came out of a flood car. Water made it almost to the bottom of the rear main seal. Floods make for lots of good used parts and many things to look out for.

OP removing ABC will wreck the character of the car. Don’t do it. ABC is a known quantity. Repair what is needed, replace all the nitrogen bombs and enjoy the car. Or buy a 221/222 with ABC/MBC and enjoy less drama.

100% here... all trunk modules, engine, transmissions, interior wood, glass, headlights... the list goes on.

Flood S-Classes can actually be rehabilitated more easily than some others.

How do you like the ride with the Yellow coil-overs? I'm considering converting mine. I've generally heard good things from people who have done the conversion. We tend to hear "don't do it..." from people who have not done the conversion. I like hearing first hand from those who have done the conversion.

On the vibration: You say it's between 1800 - 3000 RPM in park & neutral? Does it also have vibration while driving? If while driving, I would suggest the transmission mount as well. It is very easy to replace - maybe a 10 minute job and inexpensive. They don't last too long with the power of these engines.

Engine mounts don’t last in a 220 or 221 car as well. I got to do them annually. Different design for the 222 car. Haven’t needed to replace one yet.
