MB S63 AMG Coupe
Is the S63AMG just a bit too refined?

I have had my S63 Coupe for about six months now. I use it as my daily driver. The interior is best in class (on par with my former Conti GT aside from the double stitching and all metal air pulls; and much better tech than the Conti GT), the power is amazing, the cabin is probably the quietest cabin I have been in, driving around city streets is a pleasure and driving on the highway is as comfortable as it gets.

For a cruiser, the handling works (obviously can not compare to a true sports car like a Ferrari or Porsche), and it is very easy on the eyes all the way around.

With everything I enjoy about the car, there seems to be something missing - Character. I had a CLS63 at one point in time, it had character. My former Porches, all had character. Ferrari and Maserati's - check as well.

Its a subtle nuance. As one poster said, the engine noise is missing from the cabin. Maybe the transmission is too smooth as well? Maybe the cabin too quiet? After all, it is an AMG. And with an AMG, there should be some additional character to the car - even one as refined and fitting to its purpose as the S63 Coupe is.

One of my prior cars was an M4. When I took deliver, I laughed at how the engineers piped in the engine sound through the radio. But boy did the car have character. And I am not suggested MB should be piping in engine noise to add character.

But maybe they should have added an ability to adjust the sport settings on the car more in line with other AMG's in the MB portfolio. Custom tweaking of the suspension, of the transmission, and even some way to get additional engine noise into the vehicle selectively (akin to the sports exhaust on a 911).

I do believe the car is fit for purpose and does its job extremely well. And it is a real pleasure to drive. For me, a bit more character would be good.

Being "fit for purpose" is the key. The S63 is a GT (not The GT), not a sports car. I'm so glad they drew the line where they did and didn't go overboard with the sound or jerkiness inherent in a sports car. You can always buy a few of those for when you want that distinct feeling.

I've had mine since Friday. My thoughts on this -

It is way more refined than my CLS63-S despite having the same engine, tuned with higher factory TQ to offset the extra weight. Transmission is the same 7sp MCT wet clutch auto, but in this application shifting is much smoother, both in C and S modes, which presumably reflects refined TCU programming.

Comfort far surpasses CLS63-S, which feels very busy compared to the magic carpet ride of the S63. Over time, I suspect the S63 will be more immune to developing rattles because of the smoothness of the ride and better overall interior quality.

For me, the S63 is a perfect daily driver. It's fast, stylist, comfortable, and accomodates my two teenage daughters as well as a moderate amount of luggage/cargo. With the designo Crystal Grey/Black interior, carbon fiber trim, massaging seats, and 3D High End Burmester, the interior is simply phenomenal - once inside I am transported to my happy place and stress just disappears... the interior is that good!

Now having said all that, S63 cannot be and ever will be a sports car at ~ 4800 pounds. I do wish Mercedes/AMG retained the S+ and RS functions of this drivetrain, if to give the illusion of a bit more sportiness when summoned.

Well, I definitely am not looking for a sports car, as a I already have been through all the sport cars I will ever want or need. I already did the daily driver and separate weekend sports car routine, and not looking to over complicate my life by going back to that. Would be great if there really was one size that can fit all; and that's what I was hoping the S63 would be - it's 85% percent of the way there. A car that is extremely comfortable to drive daily, but able to give a proper fully loaded adrenaline rush on demand. But then again, no car would ever be 100 percent now, would it? Then again, the new Panamera is looking pretty interesting.......

I agree the new Panamera looks way better than the outgoing model. Mercedes needs to redesign the CLS to stay competitive with it, else they will lose a lot of sales to Porsche.

To me only the Wraith and Continental GT are serious competitors of the S63/S65 Coupe. The M6 coupe just misses the cut; BMW is redesigning it next year, apparently with size and weight reduction, so the new model will be further distanced from the Benz/Rolls/Bentley coupes.

The Wraith and Dawn are the only two cars left on my bucket list. I've driven neither. Has anyone? I figured I'd rather have a known-great S63 Cab, plus a matching one for the wife, than one Dawn.

I hear you all about great refinement but lacking a bit in soul which gives a car real character. Its one of the reasons I've not pulled the trigger yet. The new C63S is said to be a car chuck full of bravado but too small. I'm hoping the new E63S Coupe/Convertible due out next year sometime bridges the gap between the two with more soul and reasonable size. Styling wise they may be very similar. Time will tell.

This is what I'm banking on too. I suppose I could slum in the S if the E doesn't deliver the good looks of the S.
