How bad of an idea is this? I found a 2015 S63 with 117k on it for $40K. Car is super clean and well taken care of. Bad idea or not?

This place is a joke.
The m278 engine is only good for 90k-130k miles on average. Price a used engine plus labor and tell us if you think it's worth the risk. A new engine is around $100k...... Plus labor

G-Monkey, The S63 has M157 and not M278 and no they don't disintegrate at 110,000 miles. The labor I think is another $40,000 LOL

Basically the same engine, and they do start falling apart around then. Oil in wire harness, cam adjusters, stretched timing chains, coolant leaks, burning coolant, scuffed cylinder liners, turbo wastegates, seized main bearings, high pressure fuel pump failure, bad injectors, on and on....

2019 S63 4Matic+, 2018 E400 Cabrio, wardens car.
See the post by Rey23 in this forum. He thought it was a good idea to buy a 2015 S63 with 148K miles and he is now staring down a 23K quote to fix the trans and harness along with a few other bits and a new set of tires. You are looking at a 40K money pit that will punish your wallet faster than a drug addled prostitute. Seriously, run away from this car.
