'03 e500 goes "clickety-clack"

I have recently purchased an '03 e500 with ~80k miles. The engine makes a clickety-clack sound. Has anyone else ever experienced this? What is the fix?

I assume that you hear the noise when the engine is idling? If so then there should not be any loss of performance when driving.

Most likely what your hear is a little noise from the valves. Depending on how the car was driven up until now and what maintenance there might be a little wear on either the cams or valve stems. It should not be much but enough for you to sometimes hear it. If you can live with the clicking then don’t worry about it.

I hear the noise most when accelerating from a stop. According to the MB dealer the car was serviced appropriately, although I can't get a straight answer to what's causing it.

One dealer claims the problem is a result of carbon build up, and it's common. Another dealer says it could be the engine mounts.

Any other thoughts are appreciated.

I'm betting the engine mounts. MANY people complained about the clicking/diesel sound back in 2002 and 2003 when the 2003 E500 first came out.

If it is the mounts it should be easy to see. Get the car off the ground and have the tech look at them. There should be about 1 inch clearance and if not, they are collapsed. I am not sure about the cost but you should expect something in the $500 range to have the dealership change them out. It is possible to yourself if you are a DIY with experience.

The clicking might be the two metal bolts touching but if that is the case it should be more than just the clicking. It should feel like the motor is about to jump out of the engine bay when accelerating and really bad when idling due to the engine rocking on the mounts.

Mention DTB P-B-07.00/21f JUL03 – Engine noise. To resolve engine ticking (piston like sound) when accelerating between 1200 and 300 rpm, modified motor mounts will be installed.

Well, I had the engine mounts checked. No problem there. The next step was to perform a fuel induction service. The jury is still out on that one. The service dept said it may take a few days before all of the carbon is cleared.

Are you sure it's not just your ear? Has someone else confirmed the sound as out-of-the-ordinary?

I'm not trying to be a jerk, I'm just saying some people get attuned to different sounds than others. I hear a rattle in Mrs. EDJs car that she can't hear. I'm always going, "Hey! There it is! How can you not hear that??!!" She will just shrug.

I'm just trying to be helpful by asking if you're the only one hearing it. I'm not implying you're a wingnut.

Did they replace the purge valve? If I recall there was a modified valve released late 03/early 04 - part # 000-470-35-93.

Fair enough. Yes, it has been confirmed by others. Including the MB "sound isolation specialist."

Well, it's been about a week and the fuel induction service did not solve the problem. Clickety-Clack continues...

Meanwhile, the MB dealer won't tell me if the purge valve has been replaced. They claim that information belongs to the previous owner!

Wow they take the car's "privacy" pretty seriously when it comes to the car's service history. I think you are entitled to know anything about the car's service history that's available.

I'm pretty sure you have a right to see the vehicles Service history. Its your vehicle. All the parts,,, The good and the bad. After all, they would look to previous service records to see what was replaced if they were diagnosing a problem.

I don't think a dealer should give you the previous owners name and address, but that info is available to you elsewhere if there's a good legal reason for you to have the info.

Thats a bogus snub by your dealer's service department. A car has no Legal "Privacy Rights".
