The AMG mods were mostly aesthetic BUT they also breathed a few engine mods to the tune of an additional 15 or so hp.
I took this picture a few years ago when I visited a Japanese importer / dismantler when I was buying some stuff for my project car.

AMG had been going for 22 years already when this Mitsubishi came out. Incidentally, I believe it was the same year (1989) that Mercedes-Benz initially acquired an interest in AMG, no doubt spurred by the success of The Hammer - which in turn is the great granddaddy of our E55's.
