wtf with these air filter tubes

i went to change my air filters today and i noticed tears in the front flexible tubes, both sides...

no wonder the car feels slow....i guess, i will just duct tape them in mean time and go into dealer tomorrow...such a pain in ***..and garbage design

That's how it starts and the next thing you know the whole thing is sucked into the airbox!

It's amazing that they would make them out of this papery stuff. I'm guessing the early failing ones have seen a lot of rain driving?

its like not even a paper stuff...i dont know....the point is to keep the air in the tube, not let it dissapate out

i think one of the main reason it happens is every oil change, im sure they yank it off to get to the oil filter

the accordion nature of its build is where it seperates on each coil, its like the adhesive failed.

Wish an aftermarket option was available in a better material, even that one part in carbon fiber maybe? I'd buy that, way more affordable than a full carbon $4k box setup.

It looks like someone came up with a cost-effective solution. I actually bought two of these kits from Advanced Autoparts for when mine go bad.

Just checked mine. Have a beautiful tear (about half the circumference) in one of the tubes.

So from an engineering standpoint what is the advantage of oem fabric accordion intake tubes vs plastic or something else Benz could have employed for the same or less cost

I'm only guessing but I've always assumed the cloth was less prone to transferring heat.

From an engineering stand point this part is a ridiculous structural failure, heat was in mind but it's kind of sad AMG couldn't come up with something much more durable and efficient.

Oh well it's a easy enough custom project to fix though.

Someone could really make a few bucks selling upgraded tubes!

I was looking at pics of an S63's engine bay and the intake tubes seemed to also be longer due the engine sitting further back from the grill.

Thats what I used they work perfect. Also working on a race setup but want to make sure it works and have track times to back it up. This pic was on my cls550 I've already changed them on my cls63s!

Hey!

Something that M156 wins at! lol None of this paper crap. And M156 sounds better. But M157 wins almost everything else. Lol
