Black vs Obsidian Black Metallic
Hi everyone,
I have always had black cars and wanted to order a 2020 S560. Just wondering if it would be better to order this S class in Obsidian Black Metallic instead of regular black. What is the difference as far as the quality in the long run? Does Obisidan Black show scratches an swirls the same as black?
Thank you,

The Obsidian is a metallic black. Both get clear coated. I've had both. Obsidian costs $720 more. If you're ordering I'd get the Obsidian, but if you're taking a car from stock I don't think it matters if only the regular black us what's available. That is unless you like the looks of one over the other.

If your a cover all the bases guy, the regular black is very easy to match if you ever get a scratch or need to paint or touch up a bumper, which is common. I have the diamond white. It is the standard white with a tri coat pearl over it. My body shop told me it is the worst color ever to match perfectly. I decided to ride the wave as it is a beautiful color. I know I am in for trouble if I ever need paint work though!! Obsidian is beautiful when all clean and polished. But it will show swirls. Swirls are very avoidable. All swirls are done by washing or drying incorrectly. The swirls don't come on the car, someone puts them on there. I have had black cars only for 35 years, just bought white and am really enjoying it!!! LOL Still have 3 other black ones to torture me!!!! Good luck

Regular Black is a pure black , metallic is a tricky one to both keep clean and match up the color when it needs a paint .I had gone with a non metallic black and never had a remorse for it .

I have obsidian black and prefer it over the regular black which I had on the previous S. As for the swirls you can always consider a paint protection film. Also if you don't want swirls don't let car washes clean your car especially the dealerships. Dealerships are experts at improper washing.

Yep, you can get plain black or plain white, everything else costs $720 extra, except the Designo colors like I have Cardinal Red which is $1080. Guess that's the price of luxury.

If you pick a base model MB car and you wish to have obsidian or metallic, you pay 720USD. But if it’s not a base model, or it’s a higher end/trim, the price is
already factored in and you can choose obsidian or any metallic color at no additional cost.

I have the S in obsidian black and it looks better to me than the 040 black which I had in the prior S class.

$720 or $1080 is not much of an upcharge for a different color. My car was a $7900 upcharge for Designo Grey plus $2500 for the Customized color for a total of $10400. Crazy. It came this way to the dealer, I certainly didn't order it this way.

Remember you are posting in the W222 S Class forum. You are incorrect on the paint pricing for the S Class (we are discussing the S Class here). There is no additional charge for obsidian black. The additional charges are on the designo colors. Go to the MBUSA website. You can see for yourself!

A well detailed solid black car looks has much more gleam and reflection than a metallic black. In addition, repairing and blending paint chips on a solid color car is easy. Paint chip repairs with metallic paint will never look perfect. I hate hate hate metallic paint because I’m always thinking about maintenance and touch ups. Get the no metallic black. If you do not keep your car gleaming and spotless, metallic paint hides imperfection better.

This is an old post but I recently got a 2009 SLK55AMG Obsidian Black Metallic.
I use the same body shop who has twice repaired my 2014 Rogue which is a medium blue gray metallic.
They did the Rogue beautifully. If the painter know how to do the application correctly and manages distance and pressure they can do great matches.
My problem is they had the car 4 days and it came back with Obsidian Black not Obsidian Black Metallic. It is going back.

My 15 S is Magnatite. Easy to keep clean and when after a rain or when dusty, really doesn't show bad. Yes, had a solid black E coupe before this and when cleaned and detailed it was outstanding but imposable to keep from showing dust and spots.
