GLE 350 Oil Catch Can (W166)

Good morning folks, after doing a lot of research I am finally able to install the oil catch can to my GLE 350. You can google why catch can is needed for direct injector (DI) engines. I do not want to discuss in this post, the pros and cons of having an oil catch can, as this topic is all over the internet on DI engines. But like to show you my setup. The most challenging part was threading the flat PCV return line with a round rubber pipe (See images). But I was able to accomplish this by using a heat gun to soften the rubber 12 AN pipe, Sealant, and clamp. I have to use the bigger dia 12 AN for PCV and the small dia 10 AN tube to connect to the small dia throttle. I got those clamps to secure any leaks from Lowe's. Please see the images below. It is working fine with no leaks.

Nice set up. Those clamps don't look like stainless steel...

Update: I see oil collected in the can, around 2 table spoon after 1000 miles of driving ( regular highway driving ). It is amazing that much oil goes into intake ports and overtime it can throw code. I have heard on line around 100K miles when that start to show symptoms like rough idling, or hesitance inform of power loss or code. Best way to prevent is ( Just my experience and observation below)

PREVENTION:
1) Device to catch oil vapors: Before vapors reaches the intake valve devices like Oil Catch Can traps oil vapors.
2) Intake cleaners: Intake cleaner i.e. CRC GDI
3) The Oil's Volatility: Good engine oil and right grade and good quality synthetic produces less volatility hence prevents deposits around the intake. A low NOACK number/rating means better quality and less volatile the oil is which is better for GDI engines
https://www.worldsbestoil.ca/motor-o...rison-2013.php ( Image below ). Having said that if one has a oil catch can it can catch the more volatile oil by trapping in the can.
4) Frequency of Oil Change: More frequent oil change than recommendation as dealer want business and publicity like when they backed out from the statement "sealed for life" for automatic transmission, now for engine oil they say 7 or 10 K miles. I do not buy this I change every 4K. As I do my self ( DIY) So does not cost much. Around 50 dollars for oil + filter. Lexus es350 went to 240 K no issues sold for change, Mercedes E class 190K no issue sold for change. And now MB GLE 350 (2018) and MB GLA 2021 lets see how much they go. I might sell GLA in 2025 when my Hummer EV is expected to come. Will continue to keep GLE 350 it is a solid vehicle.

TREATMENT:
Once the issue happens i.e code, hesitance loss of power then next step is the expensive one that is removing the intake and using walnut blast.

Catch cans catch stuff, 100% certain.

Is a catch can strictly necessary? Unknowable.

It is preventative. Lot of articles and discussion on different forms. There are different preventative options which can be used alone or in combination. If you are doing preventative maintenance ( de-carbon ) like Car Wizard then no need. I prefer using catch can and GDI cleaning like Scotty (2nd video). DI engine will eventually have carbon deposit. Non DI engines do not need as the fuel injectors fires on the back of valve and keep it clean. Hope this helps

Here is the proof of Oil catch can work in GLE350. This is after 1000 miles of driving. So imagine after 10K miles. This all goes into the Cylinder through intake ports and over time can make valve stems sticky and throw code. When you see your oil is low before recommended oil change ( I change early after 5K as I do DIY in 50 bucks) time that's where your missing oil goes. Before I used to see oil in the throttle body ( where the PCV dumps oil) now it is bone dry. Also, I think because of oil the throttle body can also show symptoms in form of rough idle

Some update. I added an intake reservoir. I have seen many M276 engine comes with this but not GLE M276. I have seen in ML M276 and in E M276. I just added today. No issue so far. Also, see snapshots from a video by Leigh which shows some oil captured
