I wonder why??

Hello all,

Any idea why MB made it so we cannot close our trunk with the remote?

We can open from inside car with door button, open from via key fob and close with button on the trunk, but why no close with the button on key fob?

Many vehicles (older and newer) and many brands have that as an option. With our price points and class of vehicle I wonder why they didn’t add this?

I have tried multiple times over the years. Not that I thought it would randomly work, but rather at the shock that it wouldnt. I suspect you cannot either....

Nope. Mine doesn't either. Never knew that. I'll check with @BenzNinja to see if it is a coding thing.

in general it's yes. it's just coded to NO on many cars for some security reasons
Now on the your convertible there is no button for it on the remote, that might be a problem

any Club member with a R231 msg me so I test it

I don't think on or BMW SUV there is one either. You hold the trunk button for open, or close I think? I’ll check with my wife to see whats on the remote...

Edit---->>>>> Just heard back from my wife, only one button to open and close rear hatch...

Hey @JettaRed try the hatch button while holding the lock button at the same time. It may be a weird button combo thing to get it to work. I can't try it on mine now, because I rode my bike into work today...

I just tried closing the trunk lid by holding down the lock button -- no go. However, the hands free (foot under the bumper) feature works.

Do we know if you can remotely close the trunk lid on any of the sedans or coupes? I'm wondering if the issue with the SL is the retractable roof.

Nope.

By the way, such a beautiful day, perfect for the top down.

Yeah, I forgot to list the hands free foot sweep open/close function in my original post. Can't tell you the number of times I was working in the driveway and walked too close to the SL and the trunk opened. Did that this past weekend lol. I do use the door sweep feature quite a bit when carrying groceries. It’s very conveinent.....

I am always torn during Spring and Fall weather. I only drive top down in Summer in the morning, dusk, or night and never in mid day. Top down weather in Spring/Fall seasons is also perfect bike weather, so I am always like what to do, what to do? Today the SL lost.

I try to drive with the top down whenever I can. My comfortable target temps are between 77°F and 83°F. But I can go a couple of degrees either way depending on whether it's clear or overcast. I find with the top down, front side windows up, and the wind draft deflector up, the interior is pretty still and comfortable. My wife's hair stays in place -- I have no hair to worry about.

I have no hair either lol, but it's the summer temps. I HATE the summer sun beaming right on me even with a hat. In general it’s just too hot an uncomfortable during the day...Spring and Fall are awesome....

So, @BenzNinja hooked up to my car to see if there were any code options that allowed closing the trunk remotely and said "No". But he did suggest some 3rd party stuff that may work.

The STFHMZ3 is for our cars (R231). It does a LOT more than just remotely close the trunk.

Don't mean to hijack the thread but to me the absolute best top-down driving is in the fall when the temps dip to the 60s and the airscarf is on...

I looked at smart top years ago and always “planned” to get that addition. I have spoken with them a few times over the years and they were always very friendly and helpful...

I installed smarttop module for my 2018 SL450. remote trunk closing work by press and hold on the remote's trunk button. it also allows you to open and close the top with the remote without having to stand next to the driver side door.

yes because it doesn't use infrared anymore for that instead it uses frequency

We can already open and close the top without standing next to the driver, or passengers door. I do that all the time.

In my SLK320(R170) I used to have the top down all spring(except in rain), all summer, all fall, and I wore heavy coats and gloves until the temperatures got to freezing in the winter. In that car, I once got stuck on the interstate in a downpour. I observed that almost all the rain would get deflected up and over the interior, as long as I drove at least 70mph(there was no appreciable wind to correct for). Then I also observed, that if I went any faster than 71-72mph, I began to hydroplane. Talk about a coffin corner!
All this while looking for an overpass to get under, and put the top back up.
I must have been on a stretch of interstate that was the longest distance to the next overpass in the whole US. Minutes felt like hours.
In my SL(R232), with the help of seat ventilation in the summer, and airscarf in the winter, I can be a bit more comfortable, and squeeze a few more days out of the year, with the top down.
