2nd owner new battery issues

Purchased used 2023 AMG sl43 mid June of this year and have had no battery issues with double clicking and 20 ft rule. Then I started to play around with some of the settings regarding comfort and handling. Well I must have turned on something that started draining my battery because yesterday I received a message via MercedesMe saying my battery was “critical”. So hooked it up to my battery charger for 4-5 hours disconnected and went to sleep. Woke up and battery depleted again and could barely get the doors to work. Can use some advice. Did I need to keep the charger on longer. Have been subscribing to the double click lock but may have recently left the key fob too close. I live in a two story house with a drive under garage and have just recently left the key fob in the kitchen which is right above the garage, Do I need to keep it on the second story (top story of the house) from now on? Or have I accidentally turned on something I shouldn’t have? Car has been working fine since June purchase. Drive car at least once a week. Also is there an icon that shows battery status other than “charge”?

If I recalled correctly, the double click lock was changed to a different combination from 2023 model year due to how easy it is to be activated in the pocket for the style key.

It is true there are reports of the battery draining when the key is at a close proximity but then the key also goes to standby after a couple minutes or more if there is no movement of it which stops transmitting any signal, this was done to prevent keyless go theft.

Thanks for the info. I am currently giving it a 24 hour charge. Have a 50 yr old charger looking to replace. Any suggestions on a AGM one or even if that is necessary? Is there such a thing as “over charging” damage.

Yoy're welcome. CTEK is the manufacturer of the branded MB trickle chargers, you could read about them here:

@FirstBenz@62 please check with your MB dealer that all open campaigns have been done. There are both software updates and physical checks (12v grounding check). I could have lemon lawed my car with all of the low battery issues a couple of updates ago, but MB seems to have figured out the fix. No more critical battery messages, I don’t use the MB trickle charger any more, car works great.

Supposedly that was all done in June before I purchased the car. Hendrick’s store in CLT did it because I bought it from their Honda store in Wilmington. But will check it out with local RBM store in Atlanta. Thanks.

My dealer is RBM of Alpharetta. I just got the car back a week ago with another battery related campaign so there might be more since June.

My SL was a left over 2023 and like you I was having multiple warnings regardless of how much I drove it, shielded the key, or drove it. Turned out the battery had high resistance and was replaced under warranty. Might have the dealer test your battery.

+1 on this advice

One of the recalls is that MB gives you the battery tender, as well as rewires(?) the cigarette adapter in the trunk so you can connect your trickle charger there (rather than under the hood). I also had many critical battery warnings, but have since had none and have been very pleased. I do leave the car sitting for weeks at a time and I am used to connecting up a tender, so none of this bothers me like it does to some. Good luck, KH

Thanks all. Scheduled an appointment for next Wednesday at RBM of Atlanta. They said they will need it for a few days. I’ll ask them to hook up the battery tender in the trunk too as hooking it up there should be easier. Do you close the trunk after hook up?

I was surprised to learn that the socket was not a way to connect a battery tender from factory, they changed this config as part of one of the recalls (never tested it before the recall was done)
I do close the trunk with no issues, KH

So how did they connect? Without socket? With socket and then changed after recall?

Who was your advisor at RBM Alpharetta? I may switch to them.

My tender has not been removed or changed since Friday 3p. Still showing 3/4 charge. Is this normal or do I have something draining my battery as it is being charged? Taking it in on Wed hopefully to find out what is going

on.

Certainly might be the missing software updates which owners chimed in above.

It is correct to use the charging point under the hood as you are doing but you have the negative attached wrong. There is a dedicated post outside of the plastic door. Leave the positive attached as you are doing but attach the negative ground to the dedicated post outside of the area with the plastic door. You will get a better charge as this is how it was designed.
