Trunk won’t stay closed
Trunk won’t stay closed
Recently I was trying to load a large item into the trunk and pressed the “close” button on the trunk lid. The trunk lid closed as usual, but then opened right up again. I assumed it was because it had hit the item in the trunk, so I removed the item and tried to close the trunk again using the button. Same thing: it closed, but after a few seconds it opened again. I COULD NOT get it to close, even by doing it manually. After some online research I tried this solution and it worked: I pressed the green emergency release button located on the inside of the trunk lid, and immediately heard a motor running and then a click. (Some articles say you may have to press it two or three times, but once worked for me.) The trunk closing button then worked normally and the trunk stayed closed. I don’t know why the malfunction occurred, but this fix worked.
I have not had any obstinate trunk closing problems but thanks for the heads up .
When you have a next service visit ,you can ask the mechanic to connect their tools to retrieve anything related to it . I don't know whether or not this gremlin could throw any hidden codes to the car's system but it should be worth it

Happens with me too. The only way I got it to close and latch was to use the inside button on the driver's door.
I also had problems with the trunk staying open, so I replaced the gas struts on the trunk lid hinge assembly.

I’ve had this happen to me several times on my W222 model. The trunk button on my driver’s side was replaced, trunk hatch replaced and less than a year later the same problem resurfaced. I can’t remember what else was replaced, but it’s been to the dealership at least 6 times for the same issue in a 2 year period. I always wondered was this a system wide issue and not just my car. My W221 never had this problem.

OP, that is exactly what you have to do, hit the hostage button to reset the latch. I went through this situation myself the other day.
Trunk Lid will not close intermittently 2019 S560
MB Dealer just repaired the problem at a cost of $1,114 to me replacing the trunk lock. They listed Service Bulletin Number: LI88 50-P-068718 from the NHTSA as what the problem is and fix. Has anyone had the same issue and why isn't this covered by MB given its been logged as a problem by NHTSA? Should I call the NHTSA and ask or should I try to deal with the dealer which could be a waste of time. My 2019 S560 is out of warranty but this is not a warranty issue in my opinion its a safety issue. Thanks

Only service campaigns or recalls are always free of charge.
Service bulletin is used to communicate to dealerships of a certain problem or condition.
You can log a complaint and save your receipt in case it becomes a recall.

I just created a writeup to replace the trunk actuator. Not super difficult

My approach would be preemptive : Anticipating it to develop into a constant problem and heading it off atthe pass.
or to quote Barney Fife; “Nip it in the Bud”
That’s easier to live with than accepting intermittent problems until it becomes a “trunk won’t stay closed at all” situation.
Those situations seem to always happen at the least opportune time…miles from home, driving rain, etc.

Cold weather only problem for me. Eventually it won’t close…
I’ve been at hotels at 6am, cold in the teens or 20s, trying to leave and it wouldn’t latch. I worked a technique to cup my hands and breathe on it to warm it. Sometimes that worked. If not I’d go with my bungee. Not a happy MB owner with that situation.
No problems when temps are warm.
