Playing music from USB

I'm getting ready to take delivery of a new GLE coupe next month so I'm reading up on how everything works. Can I use a usb drive in the center console for music playback? I can't find anything in the online owner's manual that lets me know which usb slots can accommodate this. Thanks.

I have read this is possible but have not tried it yet. I did plug in a USB drive in one of the USB-C slots but that is being used for the dashcam so I am wondering if I plug another USB in with music files if that will screw things up....

I have a 2020 gls. My understanding is that only the front two usb slots can transfer data to or from the car. The remaining are slots are charging only.

camera takes one.

have not done it but my understanding is that the playlist would show on the Center screen and be available.

dont know if it applies to the mb but a past car would not recognize any playback medium that had capabilities greater than at the time of manufacture.

You can use a USB stick in any of the USB-c ports. I have one in the console cubicle between the two front seats.

I have a lot of music on a 1 tb USB in my 2021 GLE, just keep it inserted into the right hand USB-C. Helps to have a mpeg editor to modify filenames and artwork if you want everything to display correctly from the USB

I also have a 2020 GLS and my thumb drive is out of the way plugged into the console port. Also look at the supported formats for the music. I have the high end Burmester 3D and I ripped my CDs in FLAC format and sounds great.

The FLAC format is a high quality Lossless format but not supported in all vehicles. I can’t play this thumb drive in my wife’s Lexus or in my Honda Ridgeline.

I copied my preferred music into folders on a short USB A Thumb Drive and used the USB C 90 degree adapter to make it smaller so that it does not obstruct the sliding area cover.

Make sure your music format is the highest fidelity.

Then you can go to the MB USB menu and select which folder to play from.

In Youtube, there is a video on how to create MB music playlists where you create a text file containing the paths for each music file that you want to play. Haven't yried it yet.

I couldn't get the link to your video to work.

The last time I made a thumb drive for my Mercedes, I spent a lot of time and did include the metadata. (Cover art, artists etc.) Used Flac, too. I think I used Apple music because of the metadata, but I wouldn't swear to that.

Unfortunately when I uploaded from my computer to the thumb drive, each track was inserted into its own folder. So it just kept repeating itself, and I had to manually open the next folder to hear the track. Etc.

I still have the playlist on my computer. What did I do wrong, and what's a better procedure?

Here is how to create specific Mercedes audio system playlists from your USB music thumb drive music files.
