Wiring in headlight melting? Or old.

Went to change a high beam bulb & noticed what looked to be a piece of bare wire in the headlight housing. After further inspection it looks like both wires running to the high beam build either melted the sleeves off or the wires got old & brittle from heat cycling & just fell off.
Anyone else seen this before?

I had to remove the bumper & Headlight housing so I can repair the wiring.

It's common. I used electrical tape and I will correctly fix them with new wiring when I get some time.

I was hoping that wasn't the case. That probably means the other side will need repaired also. Fml

Yes, had the same issue with both headlights. ALL of the wires had cracked insulation that just crumbled, resulting in bare copper wire everywhere. I used liquid electrical tape, was very messy and only able to repair one headlamp (would not recommend this method). There are wiring kits online, but I think those are for the Halogen option only.

Yeah, after taking the housing out, it looks like someone tried liquid tape in a few spots. It's making it a real pain trying to separate & strip wires.

I'm only replacing the real brittle cracked wiring, mainly to the high beam. The other wires that are still flexible, I'm covering them with heat shrink tubing just incase.

Yep. Brittle, flaking headlight wiring. Has happened on both of my E55 vehicles. Rewired the W210 with new wiring one wire at a time; replaced the headlights on the W211.

It doesn't help that MB used this stupid thin metal adapter for the high beam bulb instead of using a simple spring clip. Mercedes never came across a simple problem they couldn't make more difficult or over engineer.

So ur in there twisting the socket around blindly in a tiny space, trying to get the build to lock but you're actually cutting, nicking, scraping wires you can't see.

Might as well stick a razor blade in there & jiggle it around a bit

It's a 93 Mazda RX7 twin turbo fd I used to own.
Black car with no a/c in Dayton FL & u still loved driving it. Wish I never sold it. 1 of several cars I've owned & sold that you can't buy now for under 30k.

I bought it in 2001 for 10K. Drove it for 3 years until the apex seals were starting to go bad at that time I didn't have the facilities or $ to rebuild it. Ended up selling it around 2004ish for 13k.
