2005 E500 - no power to cluster at all

2005 E500 - no power to cluster at all
have an issue that i cant figure out....to start off battery is good.....i checked all the fuses and resistances in the battery cables, terminals, etc.
radio TURNS ON
theres no power to dash at all....however...if you leave the battery cables disconnected then put the negative terminal back on I see the dash turn on for a few seconds displaying temperature and such then the dash shuts off after a few secs....key does not turn at all
any ideas? also pressing buttons on fob doesnt unlock/lock doors etc...seems like really only the radio works

The question is what causes all this...
ignition switch?
