You can check the fan clutch by having someone start the engine while you hold on to the fan. If the fan stays still and doesn't chop off your hand, it is bad. If it chops off your hand, it is probably good.

Hey Thats Funny.,..

anyway, the fans works in two stages, high(above90) and midhigh(above80) tempratures, some time time it works in hi stage only. i had to change the thermostate for it work again.

I am not sure about the 600 SL, however, my 320 runs between 80 and 105 too and I did a head gasket job, thermostat, radatior and fan changed ( remember to change all fluids as per owners handbook, expensive lesson here) My sister 92 300 Sl consistenltly runs the same temp too. It goes up to 105 in heavy traffic and stays a hair above 80 at highway speeds.

All MB cars run temperatures of between 85 and 115C.
It is normal and if you are used to Japanese cars, you'll be scared to death when you drive an MB.
The temperature variation depends on trafic and A/C usage.
If it's summer and you're driving uphill with the A/C on,your temp. will run up to 110C...It's perfectly normal...and don't let people tell you that you need
new this and new that...I was scared at first and changed my thermostat, fan clutch, water pump, and cleaned and flushed the radiator..still the same temp.
I have seen 110C on new R230....The main thing is not to go over 120,then you have a problem..

I bought an SL300 1993, also experienced overheating problem on and off. On top of that, the AC also sometimes works and sometimes does'nt. I guess it's the thermostat. Anybody has any idea? Any reader in Bangkok, Thailand can recommend a reliable independant garage in Sathorn area is greatly appreciated.
