Oil Pressures in a 95 SL500
Hey everyone..
I havent moved my SL in a while so i cant remember the proper oil pressure.
Seems like its low.
WHen the car is cold.. the idle oil pressure is around 3. WHen it warms up around 10 miles teh oil pressure is around the 2 mark (stop light in Drive)
When i drive on the freeway around 30 miles.. the oil pressure at idle goes to perhaps 1.3 -- 1.5 on the meter.
When i give it gas or moving completely it goes all the way to 3.
Whats everyone elses SL like?
Fk

doh.. ask questions to create more controversy
its strange.. when i drive it for short city trips and warm up hte car that way (aka errands) it stayss around 3.. even when its warm.
But long freeway drives bring it back down to around 2.. and long mixed driving (30miles plus) brings it to around 1.5

2 SL with every Brabus mods available & Class A competition sound system
when you gas it......it should go up to 3.........when you at the red light it should be at 1.5 to 2.........good luck.......

When oil is cold, it is more viscous, so you get higher pressures created. It's quite normal for the oil pressure in a warm engine to fall while the engine is idling as long as it increases when you are travelling at higher speeds.

i checked carefully today... it stayed on 3... at stop lights it dropped a tiny bit below 3 (2.8) - but i don't do much motorway mileage - lots of short journeys.
Could the oil pressure be a reason why my dealer pointed out a leaking head gasket on the last service?

THeres that link going around that is helping people with ticking engines...
saying it could be the oil tubes or the lifters. Im not sure if the oil tubes are the problem when it drops down to the 1. The car works fine.. perhaps the idle is not as smooth (due to worn motor mounts) But it seems okay for now.

My mechanic said it's perfect, couldn't be any better. It shows how worn (or not) your engine is!

Your mechanic is talking out from where the sun doesn't shine.
The oil pressure is the pressure developed by the oil pump pumping oil around the engine. A clean engine, with fresh oil filter and warm oil will offer little resistance, so the pressure needed to move it is small. At the engine speed increases, or the oil viscosity increases (low temperatiure or ageing) or the resistance to flow of a clogged oil filter increases, the pressure will increase.
Therefore, a normal engine, with fresh filter and oil and normal operating temperature will show a fall off of oil pressure at low engine revs which increases rapidly with engine revs.
If your pressure is high all the time, that suggests a clogged oil filter, an over-filled engine or incorrect oil grade.
Was this the same mechanic who was going to bore out your SL600 engine to 7.3 litres?

Blue SL get yourself together man ...think before you write.
Oil pressure is fine over 1.6 bar at idle when hot .

Personal experience. The oil pressure drops if the filter is clogged. ANything over 1 bar is ok, as long as it rises straight away when you press the accelerator. This was said by my mechanic, been an MB head mechanic for 26 years now!
The pressure shouldn't stay at 3 all the time, its quite common that the oil pressure switch is faulty. I had this on my old S Class and a new switch rectified the problem. The oil pressure on a brand new car drops down to the 2.5 mark when hot!

Now, my SL gets oil changed between 2,500 - 3,000 miles at the dealer. I guess the only explanation is a faulty oil sensing unit. But even that i seriously have some doubts because a faulty of anyting will somehow work erratically. I have the car since new and it always register at 3, no matter how long it has been driven.

My car has just been serviced by MB, the mechanic says my car is fine. I notice a tiny drop on tick-over but most of the time it states 3, I guess I better try & get the £13k that Blue SL said my black 1998 SL 600 is worth and be done with it... Just in case the fault gets worse...
I think I'll listen to the MB mechanic & not a Net-nerd without credence.

Get serious
Oil pressure depends of oil viscosity and outside temperature...you drive on straight W30 or W40 in 60F will show 3 bar all the time, but if you drive in L.A. trafic for........an hour at 90F will drop below 3 whatever W-oil you use.
So to all UK drivers in 50's F everything depends...
Pigzmickey...be more friendly with the BlueSL,after posting the 6L to 7.2 I do not take you very seriously eather.Open the hood (the bonnet) and show us the AMG,would you?

What gets me is the wheeley bins stashed right next to the front door which I have to admit are quite useful for quick disposal of the take-out cartons and old copies of the "Sport" (pornographic newspaper). Also, I don't get the red/white barrier, presumably stolen from the local council. And what is that thing under a plastic cover, your scooter?
You obviously don't live in Clifton.... (best area of Bristol).
Tell me Pigsmickey, do your neighbours think you're a prat or is it only me?
