My 97 SL 600's suspension has a mind of its own. The front end is bouncy and goes up and down even when at a complete stop. Does anyone have any idea what may be causing this?

Something wrong with your ADS (Active Dampening System) computer?

I have heard the R129 SL 600 had that system. An early version of the current Active Body Control system on the R230.

But I do not know this for certain.

Thanks Chris. I agree that it is probably either a computer or sensor problem. I'll probably have to take it to a dealer to diagnose ($$$$). I apreciate your response, though. Funny, I also own a late model Grand Cherokee and my SL has a pano top, but it's black on black. Thanks again.

According to my copy of The SL Experience, ADS was introduced in 1993 and was standard equipment on the 600SL. The MBZ spec pages don't mention ADS for the 96-97 SL600, but ADS is shown as an option for the 96-97 SL500, and that usually means the feature is standard on the SL600.

I got an owner's manual off E-Bay today and learned that if the battery dies (which it did), the ADS system will malfunction until you turn the steering wheel all the way left and then all the way right to reset it. Wouldn't it be something if that was all it takes to fix the problem. I'll try it an test drive the car tommorow
