Rear Jump Seats for the SL
While used in other countries, rear jump seats are not legal for the SL in the United States, nor are they safe in any country. Stop to think what might happen if the rapid deployment automatic roll bar activated while someone was in the jump seats -- would be kinda like a guillotine effect and you would have blood all over your pretty SL, not to mention the loss of a a couple of friends!

You can have the rear seats only if they came as standard fitting in your SL.
They cannot be retrofitted..The original ones came anchored with seat belts
attached to the chasis..
On the question of roll bar,you should have it always up if you have rear seat passengers as they will be decapitated in case of activation...It's a scary thing....

I have need to very occasionally put someone in the back seat, so I looked at the ones that are available from various sources (often referred to as the "kinderseat"), but concluded that they were too expensive for my occasionally use. So I actually did my own rear seat. I found upholstery material that matches the Shell interior (I was very lucky on this one) and ordered the belts from an online parts house. The correct in-the-chassis mounts, are still present even in the R129 cars; the threaded hole is just plugged with a short bolt. I sourced some longer grade 8 bolts locally to install the belts. I created a top and bottom hard backed cushion (the top cushion in not in the car right because I just cleaned the carpets and the back part is still drying). I emulated the stitching pattern from the front seats for the rear.
Again, I use this only very occasionally and only with the roll bar in the up, pre-deployed position. I would absolutely not recommend using any jump seat in the R129 on a regular basis. The shelf in the R129 is much higher than that in the previous R109 because MB needed the space for the subwoofer and the phone/tele-aid electronics. Because the passengers are up higher, they are much more "exposed".
As for legality, in the US, no manufacturer may sell a car with NTSHA/DOT certification requires includes testing for compliance with all restraint and impacts requirements. Lap belts in the back seat have been required for a long for over 30 years, with 3-point lap/shoulder belts (those near a window) being required since 1989.
But the use and installation of seat belts, seats, and other modifications to a vehicle is regulated by state vehicle codes and so varies state-by-state. In some states, you can retrofit belts and seats legally. In others you can’t.

Just my two cents worth,

Flooby... from what I can see, it looks almost factory. Maybe I should get you to do me up a set. Nice job. Tell me, with a passenger in the back, how far forward is your seat? I bring my 7 & 12 year olds with me on short trips, but I have to put the steering all the way in and bring the seat forward quite a bit to accomodate their legs. Quite an uncomfortable position. I also know (as my wife continoulsy remind me) the tags on the quarter panel pillar specifcally states the car is for two passengers only.

I have them in my own SL but never use them...they are always folded down...makes it more comforteable for our german sheppard to sit on it.

Thanks! I was trying for the factory look. I cut all of the material for detailed paper templates (like the kind that are used for sewing clothes) with the idea that they could be reproduced by others. Unfortunately my basement flooded and they were destroyed.
As for legroom I'm fairly short so moving the seats forward is not that much of a problem. It can be a real tradeoff.
I hope this helps.

greetingz,
here in Lebanon.
Surely, you can retrofit anything to any car,but wether it is approved or not by the manufacturer is another story.
If you look at SL's without the rear seats, you can see that it will be a
humongous job to retrofit the original MB seats...
I have never seen an R129 that had this job done.

If you are still looking...
Currently on German ebay - not the cheapest I've seen -

The vendor seems to do a good line in 129 bits, however...

SL600
I installed the seats and seatbelts in my SL600. Looks great. Although not really used, I think it helps to complete the look. The empty rear shelf always looked a little odd to me.
I spoke with the owner of jj products before ordering; they are a first-class organization. They have been doing this sort of thing for years, and not only is the color a perfect match, but the materials are also a perfect match. Believe me, I did not want to muddle-up my SL600....
Will post some pics later, a but difficult to get a good shot with the hard top on...
