Speeding Stories
Any one have a good high speed story?
I have not had a speeding ticket. Knock on wood. But find the power of the SL500 intoxicating when driving around by myself or with like minded (read ... not my wife) passengers.
Most short high speed bursts go to 125 mph.
Anything approaching open road (medium traffic) for even a short distance 100 mph.
Once driving through the boonys of the rocky mountains / foothills ... near Autobahn conditions no one arround. Had to make up some time ... 115 mph for about an hour.
What a great car!

05 SL500, 02 BMW Z3 (Mrs. VF), 05 FJR1300, 91 ZX-11
Topped out a BMW R1150 RS on the Autobahn between Munich and Garmisch, about 150 mph, for 40 km.
Saw an indicated 170, probably about a real 160, between Frazier Park and Taft on my ZX-11
Held the FJR wide open at a GPS verified 152 for 4 miles in eastern Washington.
Ran the CLK up to the rev limiter, about 135 indicated on I-5 south of Centralia.
Wife ran the Z3 up to 125 or so on Hwy 18 when I was too f u to drive one night.
No tickets.

In the SL : 125 daily,140 a couple of times.
But that's in Lebanon where law enforcement is " sympathetic"...
I have a nice story of my days in Europe:
I was driving my Renault Espace[mini van] on the Via Aurelia in Italy
which is a national road and not a freeway.
It was back from Rome and up to Tuscany after midnight.
I was in a convoy of 5 cars all going 100/110 mph..[remember,it's only a minivan]...Oh,I forgot it was a right hand drive car[english plate].
We all got pulled over by hiding carabinieri for speeding.
When our turn came to be formaly abused,he looked at the left hand side of the car and saw my wife and no steering..
It took him a couple of seconds to register that the steering was on the other side
He paused for a second and then said: vai,vai......go....go
He let us go and booked all the italian cars...
It pays to have your steering on the wrong side once in a while..

LOL...he is a friend of my family. He's in his thirties, had the car for five years, and it was at a Hampton's Rally. They closed off a section of the Long Island Expressway and it was a nice open stretch of road. What an experience it was.

So here I am,one Sunday afternoon cruising up the Don Valley Parkway, at about 60 when a Ford pickup showed up in my rearview mirror. Oh well,I thought, farmer in town, let me put some distance between us. Bumped the SL up to 90. What do you know , buddy puts his indicator on to pass.
At this point, we are pulling onto the ramp where the DVP spliits onto the 401 expressway, tight turn and the Sl handles it easily, opens up maybe 3 car lenghts between the Ford, and got the pedal to the floor. Believe me guys, that truck closed the gap in seconds, pulled into the fast lane and left me slack jawed. All I heard was the rumble of whatever souped up motor he had in that sleeper. At 120 mph, I called off the race for two reasons, I had no hopes of passing and my son would snitch to my wife on the road race, then I would be in the dog house.
I am now thinking, maybe I should be shopping around for an Sl 500, bring some respect back and defend my honor.

Funny I should see this thread now. Just got back from a Sunday drive that took longer than it should have because I blew past my exit at a little under 130 racing a Mustang Cobra. He did pretty good up until about 120.... That was my 500SL. I seem to hit 100 pretty often too. Used to take my v12 XJS up to 120 now and agin but it felt like it could go airborne at any second and involuntary lane changes were not a rare experience....

The fastest I've gone in my SL is 110. Twice, back to back days. Had the SL out for homecoming night and went 110. I don't know why I didn't push it any further, but there was definetly a lot left.

It always amazes me how fast this car can go from 80 to 120. Today wen I glanced down at the speedo I expected to see 100 and was surprised to see the needle flying past 120. I think 140 was just a few more seconds away but I ran out of road....

got a nother one today on the way back from LA,
i was on the 5 i think, and in the carpool lane, and no cars for a good 1/2 mile ahead. my friend said "mark, PUNCH IT." i was like why? hes like, " i wana feel" i was like... uh, ok. so at 60 i dropped it! and man did it pull! all the way to 4th gear at 118mph, then at 122 i brought her back down to 80. he was like, "yea, thats faster than my old 928 S4." it was fun to open her up (again)

If there just happens to be a large amount of empty pavement ahead and I see the hot car coming up from behind at a good rate of speed, and I am just cruising along at a steady pace ... I love to time their approach in the rear view mirror ... then punch it to not allow them to pass and even leave them in the dust

It must be quite a shock.
On dy last summer we were playing cat and mouse on the freeway with a convertible Mustang for about 15 minutes. It was a young at heart Mom driving with a couple of young kids in the back seat (a bit irresponcible as a roll model).
At one stage I pulled the formentioned "you can catch up but you can't pass" manouver. Later when traffic got to be slow bumper to bumper she yelled out "That Merc can sure get out and move!"

Today I showed a 2006 Mitsi Evo IX who's boss, he was OK until around 50mph, then bye bye... At about 90mph there was a football pitch between us & when I hit 150mph I had a job to see him.
You can fit all the (***** extending) turbo's that you like, but you can't beat 6 litres of girth!

Dude, last Saturday i was driving from San Jose to Frisco at about 12am at night...then i saw a Honda, he wanted me to show them the powr of the benz so i gun it haha but a few bus lenghts between us. Anyways then i was driving nice and slow hmm cuz i had people in my car, and a civic is infront of me, gets behind me and flashes his lightss at me.... I slow down and i flash my lights at him. Then he started getting all crazy, he tried to push me off the road etc. hahaha i almost fooled him that i was taking the exist but jumped back in the freeway, causing him to almost killed his car! Anyways, i was freaken amazed, i was doing about 135mph...and the ****er would catch up like nothing! Any ideas, what he might of had under the hood ? he would slam his breaks at about 140 infront of me, and i would swerve at those speeds out of his way...crazy *** people out there! I need some mods for my car so i can freaken pass these freaks like nothing!
