A few
SL500 mechanicals
I'm looking at SL500s between 96 and 98. How are these cars mechanically? I know the older Benzes tend to be bulletproof, but I've heard stories too.
So, what's your take? :P...is say, near 200,000 miles far too much for these cars?

I do not know about the '96 or '98 cars but I have a 1991 black / palomino 500SL with 190K on her and she just keeps on going without problems!
Actually, it is a bit frustrating in that I am ready to move up to an R230 model but, since it has no problems, I am having a hard time in convinving myself to sell it for 8-9K and buy something for 90+.
IF you find a car with great service records and regular fluid changes, no telling how long these things will last.

In my opinion, generally speaking, it's the maintenance, not the miles that is the issue. If the previous owner(s) took great care of the car and it's verifiable, your risk of ownership is manageable. That said, if I found the perfect car, got the requisite woodie when I drove it, if the maintenance records were not available, I'd run, not walk to the nearest exit. At the very least, whatever you buy, insist on a Pre-Owned Inspection by a highly qualified Tech. Best $150 you ever spent.
