Hello! Newbie to the Forums - Horn Question
Hi All...I've just registered, as I recently purchased a 98 SL500 Sport (black on camel, 64k miles, knock off Lorinser rims). I really am enjoying the car, but I just discovered I have no horn. I did a search and couldn't really find what I was looking for. Here's what I know:
1) Fuse checked, and is OK
2) When depressing the horn in the car, I can hear the relay click
3) When I press the "panic" button on the key fob, the alarm sounds.
A few questions: Is the horn on this vehicle the same as the alarm klaxon? (How would I know - the horn doesn't work!) If not, where is the horn located? (I think the alarm klaxon is behind the passenger headlight). Anyone ever experienced something like this before?
Thanks, and I'm looking forward to learning a lot. I was active on the Rennlist forums when I had my 1988 951, and I found them to be an invaluable resource...I'm sure my experience here will be the same!

AMG,
Welcome. I wish I could be of some help with the horn issue but, you certainly can find a lot of info here. We have a good group of 129 owners here. Have you tried a search? Also might try benzworld.org. Post some pics on the picture thread when you get the chance.

Thanks, CRB..Yes, I should've mentioned, I ran through the search function and found a bit of info. I actually found a post very similar to my own, but with no responses...

Keep trolling. Something should come up. Good luck. At times like these, it's great to have a good relationship with a knowledgable mechanic.

The alarm klaxon is a different horn on your car.
Since you hear a relay click, you probably have a problem with the horns or wiring from the relay. I would check for voltage at the horns (picture).

You can purchase the DVD directly from MBUSA. See this website: http://www.startekinfo.com/StarTek/o...stedDocId=8002. I'm unable to make any copies...I don't even have the DVD myself at the moment.

Well, I finally got around to checking the voltage to the horns; all appears well. Relay clicks when horn switch is depressed, voltage gets to horns...no horn noise...
SO...any thoughts on replacing the horns? Original, used original, or upgrade?
