is it possible to retrofit OEM xenon headlights

a 2001 SL500 I'm looking at does NOT have xenons, which i really like. is it possible to retrofit oem xenons? how much? do i need to take the car to teh dealer to re-program the computer? or is it plug & play.. i'm guessing i won't have auto-leveling or bi-xenon capability. any help appreciated

The OEM xenons are anywhere from $2000 to $3000 for a pair....... it plug & play but it would need to be take in to the dealer for re-program the ECU so the auto-leveling to be working........

I recently installed oem xenons on my '95 SL500. Bought them on Ebay for around 700-800 a year ago. Had to replace one ballast ($40 also on EBAY). Took me a whole day to install, especially the left side where the space is tight and the cable is very short. There is a good thread here somewhere with details how to prevent switching xennons off when highbeam is on.

All in all it was worth it. The original lights were all but useless.

The left side cable is short because there are 2 bolts sticking out horizontally on a wall just behind the light that the ballast fits on. It took me a while to work out, but noticing that the holes in the fixture plates and cable lengths were different for R & L made me think that there must be somewhere real close that it goes onto! Let me know if you want a picture.

Left hand ballast location

This pic is of the area directly behind the left hand light (ie looking back). Lift off that rubber mount supporting the round plastic thing with the red and brown wire going into it and place the ballast under the metal bracket/support and onto the two horizontal bolts. You will prob have to buy 2 nuts to secure.

I guess if your car is pre-'xenon as an option', then you may not have the bolts .....

Regards
Pete
