My SL came without the factory jump seat option. From a practical point it is better without it as I have a flat floor storage area and two lockable containers under the floor.
I have an opportunity of getting a complete jump seat for little cost, it would make the car look more luxurious, but will I lose the two storage containers under each seat - does anyone know?
Thanks, Hal

I would be a little nervous to do this. Does your rego cert show 2 seats or 4 seats? Would you be covered by insurance with this change?
I am sure its technically simple but check the insurance and legal implications.

As I understand it, the rear jump seats are not legal in the US -- the main reason being if you are in a serious accident or a roll over or even a near roll over situation the automatic roll bar will pop up and decapitate your back seat passagers -- lots of blood and a mess on the nice leather!

I have the factory rear seat in my 91 300SL. I took me about an hour to remove the rear storage compartment and install the back seat w/ regular tools. I have a 5 year old that rides w/ me from time to time and the roll bar is not an issue b/c she is small. Not sure if I would put an adult back there...The car was designed for the rear seat in Europe, infact there holes under the trim in the storage compartment where you can bolt the rear seat belts, you just have to remove the plastic filler plug....hope this helps!

Well, if you are going to install the jumpseat into your SL, make sure you get the kind with the warning for the roll bar. And you should always use the jumpseat with the rollbar in the up position. If your backseat passengers are too tall, then they just shouldn't be there. The backseats in the SL models, at least the newer ones (90+), I am pretty sure were only offered as a factory option on the European models.
