The perfect car . . .
I went for a late-night, top down drive in my 2000 SL500 tonight. It's just under 80 degrees with a touch of humidity - beautiful convertible weather. It's probably one of the last (and rare) such nights of the season here. I had the top down, the iPod going through the Bose and the Dension adapter, taking some twisty roads through the country side and then hitting the highway, enjoying the power and seamless handling of the SL. When I got home I stood back from the car and admired the classic, low profile lines and I decided that the R129 is quite possibly the perfect car.
For what it's worth, I just thought I'd share my thoughts.

I agree 100% - did the same 2 nights ago, weather was perfect. What started out as just quick trip down the street turned into a 2 hour ride. Top is down more than it is up - no matter what the temperature.

Couldn't agree more. I love night time cabriolet cruising.
Headed down to San Juan Capistrano. this weekend. Can't wait to drop the top this morning, do the hour drive, play some golf this afternoon and do some al fresco cruising this weekend.
Went up to the Pebble Beach Car week about a month ago and the drive up and down the coast was spectacular. 900 miles
with the top down about 80% of the time. Certainly one of the best perks of owning the 129.

1998 sl600
I just bought a 1998 SL600, with 18k miles on it. I was getting worried reading everybody's comments on repairs. But the car looks and drives fantastic, particularly when the top is down. I will try to buy a extended warranty tomorrow. Any suggestions ?

Try Warranty Direct and do an advanced search for answers to many questions and thing to look for.
Unless your new baby has been abused by another foot or now. yours, you have every reason to expect good things for long time. That being said, the V12 is going to be more expensive to maintain and repair. But i assume you knew that going in.
My 500 has 18k and had original warranty until Feb. of this year. Fortunately I have a good relationship with some service reps and they did a very comprehensive freshening during the last covered appointment.
Just stay on top of the regular things. Again, you'll find anything you need if you look:
