SL/R129: Starter/Transmission Issue?
Have just returned from a Saturday drive out to Needles and back; great weather, Route 66 fun in the desert, spectacular bus accident with fatalities occurred about 15 minutes in front of me and was just becoming a scene when my group of cars got ushered through by the CHiPs...
In the driving and performance, though, the SL drove like a dream - these cars just love long-haul expressway driving on good roads, don't they?
So now to the problem. Today, every time I started the car, the starter thing (that makes the "chiffy" sound at the turn of the key) seemed to get stuck, where it would keep doing that even though the engine had begun running and the key was not stuck in the ignition/start position.
What the hell is going on here? First I've got that other tranny ghost-in-machine problem that has come back pretty strong, and now this! If anyone knows what this issue might be (the start-up thing described in the foregoing paragraph), let me know. I'd also like to know what that sounds like needs repair, and a ballpark of what something like that costs. It seems like a flywheel/flexplate tooth-grinding issue potentially, which to fix would require dropping the tranny out of the car - an immediate trip to "expensive repairland". Then again, maybe I'm wrong.
I'm a little bummed out about these problems I've been having. I love this car, even with $4.50 gas...
