Stale Gasoline Questions - high rpms

My dad recently had to get the battery replaced in our 97 320 because it sat all winter...after resynching the radio (strangely enough the top didn't have to be resynched), etc, I thought the car was good to go for the summer....but

The car has about 1/2 tank full of gas left over from probably late October....
After driving the car today for a good hour, and letting it warm up....
I went for a good test run/0-60ish run and when the tachometer hit past 4500 RPM it was almost like there was no power and it was just revving in neutral. But when it was below 4500 RPM it just seemed normal...

I'm thinking its the old gasoline, and hoping its not a tranny problem. I don't see how it could be a transmission problem because the tranny isn't struggling to find a gear its almost like theres just no power at higher RPMs..

What do you guys think?
Anyone else have similar experiences?

Thanks for the help!

300E a couple 1994 w124wagon E320 Wagon/,1971MGB Track/Rally, MG Midget Autocross ,2000 E320 wagon.
Put

in a can of seafoam brand gas treatment and fill the tank with premium to mix it fully.
Check the air filter and clean the mass air sensor with crc brand maf cleaner.

2005 C Wagon (No snickering please!)
I would skip the Seafoam. It is non-detergent oil and alcohol. Those are not needed in your fuel system. I would, however, fill up with premium and add a bottle of Techron. Techron is approved by Mercedes for engines that may have run on poor quality gasoline. Use as much of that tank as practical, then refill with premium. The effects of the stale gas should now be gone.

It changes all the time
Fuel from Oct. shouldn't be a problem. I'd look elsewhere. When was the last time you changed the fuel filter? Just curious, have you ever checked your fuel mileage? This has nothing to do with your problem. I just happen to have the same car. I just got back from a 1300 mile vacation trip down the coast and back. I constitently get 23MPG. My wife thought that was terrible. I told her that considering the weight and pinache of the car, I was extremely pleased. I suppose we could get 30MPG in an econo box, but how much fun would that be?

In our old 300SL, we consistently got almost 30mpg.

You should be seeing a lot more than 23mpg...
