hello everyone,
I have a j-spec 90 500sl and i am having trouble pulling out the stereo from my car. it is a technics casettte unit. i have the special tool required to pull it out and the tools do lock in but when i try to pull it out i just stays in there no matter how hard i pull. ive tried everything i could and i just dont know what to do now. any advice? also is there a detailed radio removal thread with a lot of pictures ive searched but could not find.

thanks in advanced

It's been a very long time since I worked on 90 SL but I think even though the radio and ac controls are updated on my 97 that they still are removed using the same tools. Try to use the tools to remove the AC controls first, then you can lock the tools in on the radio and reach into the hole in the dash left by the AC controls and "help" the radio out of the hole (or figure out what it's getting stuck on).

Maybe someone else knows how to pop the AC controls out on your year model.

Do you have the correct tool for the technics or are you using the OEM tool??? We didn't sell Technics or Panasonic where I installed in the 80s and 90s so I don't know what their removal tools are supposed to look like and exactly how they unclip from the cage BUT if you can get the AC controls out it you should be able to see what are you working with. It should have a metal cage the radio slips into, the cage should have tabs that are folded back into the dash to secure it...you do not want to remove the cage with the radio still in the cage (it can be done, I don't recommend it) so it's important to figure out a way to get it out without damaging the wood trim (I think the wood piece is $1600+ at the dealer).
