1999 SL500 CD changer died, HELP

The CD changer in our SL died and replacement cost seems to be in the 200 to 500 range. In my Chevy pickup I have an after market mp3 player amp and new speakers installed for 500US dollars and I love it. I don't expect my SL to be so easy not to mention who I would trust to tell me what the best options for my car stereo are. This is where I need you guys. HELP!!! What should I do? Replace the old changer or replace the stereo with a modern system?? Any advice would be greatly appreciated My car is a sport with the Bose system.

What's wrong with the changer?
Did you try a new/other cartridge.
I had that problem on both the ML & the SL. A new cartridge solved my problems.

A new cartridge??? I never even considered that the cartridge could very well be the problem and not the unit! Where would one find the correct cartridge? without buying the complete changer? I’m seeing used changers for this car for 200 dollars on e-bay. I won’t pay that kind of money for such an old CD changer. This is why I so quickly decided to start thinking about an after market systems. However with all the new stereo technology out today, my 1999 Bose system was completely satisfying when it was working! Thank you sir I will search for a cartridge and cross my fingers.

Any MB dealer should have the CD Magazines (Cartridges), they run about $33 a piece. I think Pioneer made the actual CD changer so if you have the right part # you might be able to find them on the internet but not much cheaper.

cd changer

keith - its probably not the changer. if it is the ones on ebay work fine and are easy to change out.
changing the wiring and the rest of the radio hook up seems too much work to me.

Actually, I was a bit embarrassed to say anything but I have had nothing but bad luck trying to get this issue resolved so I took matters into my own hands so to speak. My low life dealer charges 90 US Dollars for a replacement cartridge and don’t ask the cost for the complete unit. So I put my head in the trunk and watched the unit try to load the CD’s. You could see it go through each one and not grab a CD…… So I punched it square in the face….. And it started working…….Yeah, I don’t know what to say.. If it stops working again I will go to my local stereo dealer and see if they can install an mp3 player. My hand hurts but my feet are tapping as I drive!!!

Keith, I believe it was MY98 that they changed to a fiber connection. I have a MY00 SL and these are the p/n's that I would consider from eBay.

Integrated trunk-mounted 6-disc CD changer, OEM p/n 0028207989 model# MC3198, discounted to $486.00 NEW
CD magazine p/n 0028206289 discounted to $31.71 NEW
