Should I buy a SL500

Hey guys i have found a really good deal on a 1990 sl500 with 90,000 miles.

the guy just had it painted and serviced at a mb dealership and a tuneup done.

what are somethings i should look for and is the sl500 a reliable car?

what is the cost to maintain a car like this?

i have never owned a Mercedes before and want to know what to expect if i buy this one.

mercs are expensive to maintain of somting fails. have 25% of the car available for repairs.

Try this page and read the stickies, or try a seach. There seem to be more traffic there for the R129.

do you guys think this is a good deal for 5500 bux?

it has a 106,000 miles not 90 like i previously stated sry another one i saw had 90k and i got em mixed up.

says it was just servieced at a cost of 2400 and paint that cost him 4000 and he said he just had a new transmission installed. so idt it should have to be serviced for a while should it? besides like oil changes and stuff

The transmission is a big one. Just be sure he can provide receipts for all the work done.

1. Check for leaks all over.
2. Check the soft top operation.
3. Make sure the shifts are smooth and consistent.
4. Make sure the power is fluid and not choppy.

The SL500 has a standard suspension setup, so you do not have to worry about the ADS going out at that mileage. If you love the car, I would offer $5000 and keep another few thousand in reserve for repairs.

These are fun cars...just costly to maintain.

90 is too old. you can get a 96 or newer for a good deal these days. remember the SLs have major problems with hydrulic top, AC leak which requires the dash to be removed to repair (about $2000). go with a little later model, still under or around $10,000, and save yourself headache in the long run.

SLs are totally awesome cars, and you'll love it.

Concurr. MB models usually run a span of ten years and early models are prone to number of problems, which they resolve and improve as they go along. Therefore, early on models' are not the best choices. (Unless, you like that repaint color). Enjoy your new SL. w/ smiles Jimmy

yea i offered the guy 5000 and he wouldnt take any less than 5800 for some reason. idk its been on ebay 3 times now i think i guess he doesnt want to sell his car.

i think i am going to buy a 1992 190E 2.3 16v instead tho because insurance for that sl was ganna be high because i just recently had an accident in my truck but the person who cause it left and so my insurance went up...
