SL/R129: Engine missing and Check Engine Light Lit

1999 Mercedes Benz sl500
Engine missing and Check Engine Light Lit
If my 1999 SL500 has been sitting for a day or so it starts with a terrible miss. It acts like it is running on 4 cylinders and the check engine light comes on.
It clears gradually after shutting down and restarting the engine 2 times or so and driving a few blocks but the check engine light stays on. Usually after driving a few miles and making a few stops and starts of the engine the check engine light goes off.
What can be happening?
Any help would be appreciated.
